Barks on Boards, Plunge, Service, Concerts This Weekend

Life Guards will turn an impressive wooden key to open the Ocean, Business Persons will plunge into the Atlantic to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, Doggies will walk the boards, there will be two concerts and of course our annual Memorial Day Service on Mon., May 31. BUSINESS PERSONS PLUNGE: Ocean City kicks off the Memorial Day Weekend in dramatic fashion. Members of the business community, dressed in formal attire and swinging briefcases, will smart step into the Atlantic to welcome the summer. Heart Walk, Annual Wellness Expo Set for This Weekend

The emphasis will be on health this weekend in Ocean City. The Annual Weekend of Wellness expo is set for May 21 and 22 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace and the American Heart Assn. Walk will be held on Saturday, the 22nd. The HEART ASSN. will include over 500 participants. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Sports and Civic Center, 6th and Boardwalk. The Walk begins at 10:30a.m. Groups gather in back of the Sports and Civic Center near the football field and tour tents set up by the Heart Assn. with informational materials and give-aways. Philippine Tribute Planned For June, More Events Set For May

A contingent from Ocean City traveled to New York recently to solidify the City's June 26-27 Sister-City Tribute to the Philippines, June 26-27. We met with Counsel General Cecilia B. Rebong and members of Filipino trade, commercial and social organizations. The Tribute will feature a Cultural and Craft exhibit in the Pavilion area of the Music Pier both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night at 8 p.m., Imelda Papin, Asia’s Queen of Sentimental Songs, will entertain in the Pier Auditorium. Papin recently performed in Las Vegas with Melissa Manchester. Tickets to her shows can run as high as $85. Thanks to sponsors, we are able to keep the price to $20, a real bargain for an international star of this stature. Mothers Day Features a Concert and Flowers in Ocean City

The West Chester District Senior Strings, a large group of talented musicians, will be featured in a free concert at the Music Pier on Mother’s Day, Sun., May 9 at 4 p.m. The group is directed by Charles dePasquale, a veteran member of the Ocean City Pops Orchestra. The concert is sponsored by the Ocean City Art Center’s Friends of Music, an organization that was established by Esther Weil. Esther brought several hundred concerts to Ocean City during her life time and she and her husband, Paul, were true patrons of the Arts. The Weils financially supported many of the concerts so that admission was either free or very affordable. Sunday’s concert is in memory of Esther.
