Crabby Miss Crustacean About to Claw Her Way Into Ocean City

August 3: The Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant, an event eagerly anticipated by crabs and their best friends alike, is set for 1 p.m., Wed., Aug. 3rd at the 6th St. Beach. Entry is free. Registration starts at noon. The contest is sanctioned by NASCRAB, the National Assn. of Crab Activities at the Beach, an Ocean City Organization. Several years ago Ocean City was contacted by Virginia Beach, Va. asking permission to run a similar event and was granted a franchise. Past winners of Miss Crustacean include Crabopatra, an exotic Egyptian Crab, Copa Crabana, a sultry show girl crustacean, Crab Salad, Taxi Crab and Pirates of the Crabibbean. Ferko, Glenn Miller, Philippines Tribute This Weekend

July 21: The World Famous Ferko String Band will perform 8 p.m., Thurs., July 21 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Tickets are $12, available at the Music Pier Box Office, 609-525-9248. Formed in 1922, the Ferko String Band established the most successful record of wins in the history of the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. The Band has strutted away with first place 20 times and placed in the top five an amazing 82 out of 88 parades. Today the Band is as strong as ever with over 90 members ranging from 50 to 80 years of age. Night in Venice Parade Sails into the City this Weekend

July 16: The Night In Venice Parade is set for 7:30 p.m., Sat., July 16 starting at the Longport Bridge and concluding at Tennessee Ave. Expect a smaller boat Parade and fewer decorated homes this year. It will still be an impressive sight but the Recession has prompted many to forgo the expense of decorating and fueling boats. Some home owners, too, have been hesitant about scheduling parties and decorating. In spite of that there will be well over 140 decorated homes. Night In Venice has been held every year since its inception in 1954. It has never been cancelled by the weather, real or financial. It’s Less Than Two Weeks Till Night in Venice. Register Now For Contests!

July 16: NIGHT IN VENICE is early this year: July 16, less than two weeks away. It’s time to register your boat or home for the annual competition. The Boat Parade begins 6:30 p.m. by the Longport Bridge and ends at Tennessee Ave. Optional theme this year is Broadway on the Bay. Entry is free. There will be cash prizes for all who enter boats plus trophies for boat winners and best decorated homes. Boat participants will receive $50 cash cards to enhance decorations providing they finish the Parade.
