Night in Venice Theme Announced; Travel Channel Commends City

“Do You Remember When?” will be the optional theme for NIGHT IN VENICE 2012. The nostalgic theme will give boaters and homeowners plenty of flexibility. For instance, decorations could recall your favorite song, past eras like the ‘50s, the ‘60s, even the ’20s if you want to go back to the Flapper days, your favorite movie of all time, Ocean City memories, etc. The theme is just a suggestion. You are free to select any theme you wish. The Night In Venice Committee began providing suggestions five years ago when it began receiving numerous requests for decorative ideas. Theater Groups, Library, Art Centers Holding Events in Ocean City By Mark Soifer, Ocean City Publicist

Plenty of events are scheduled in Ocean City this winter, thanks to our Theater groups, Art Centers, Library and other organizations. (Through January) The Ocean City Free Public LIBRARY, 17th and Simpson Ave., offers a winter Women of Jazz Series produced and sponsored by the Library and the Somers Point Jazz Society. The three part series started last week and continues on Sun., Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. with May Lou Newnam, a saxophone/Flutist with a performance and discussion featuring Women Pioneers in Jazz. It will highlight some of the most important women in jazz from the 1930s to the present. Instrumentalists and vocalists from this era will be highlighted. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony set for Saturday at High School – By Mark Soifer, Ocean City Publicist

Members of the Community will gather on Saturday to honor the memory and deeds of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The annual tribute is set for 1 p.m., Sat., Jan. 14 at the William and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center, Ocean City High School, 6th and Atlantic Ave. The afternoon will feature music and personal tributes to Dr. King plus a recitation by Rev. Gregory Johnson of the inspirational “I Have a Dream” speech. Music will be provided by The Levites, a gospel group. A number of area residents will be honored with Dr. Martin Luther King Awards for their service to the community. If You Live in Ocean City, You’re Not Likely to be Angry!

If you live in Ocean City, you are less likely to be angry or depressed. That’s what a recent Gallop-Health Ways survey reported after polling a million households throughout the country. Ocean City scored twice as a “Best Performer” in the survey to determine the nation’s well being index. Included in the report is data on physical and emotional health, financial stability and access to basic necessities. Ocean City was the only community in New Jersey that scored in the index and one of two in the nation that was rated “Best Performers” twice.
