King and Queen of Plop set for August 30th in Ocean City

By Mark Soifer, Ocean City Publicist OCEAN CITY, N.J.: How does Ocean City greet the coming of the fall season? By plopping,what else? For the past five years this family resort has held the KING & QUEEN of PLOP Contest. Participants demonstrate dramatic plops on the sand to illustrate their enthusiasm for the fall, a beautiful time in Ocean City with many special events. On Fri., Aug. 30, a group of “right proper ploppers” will vie for the title of the King and Queen of Plop or Mr. Fall Guy or Miss Fall Gal. After the winner is announced contestants hold hands and perform a “mass plopping” as a goodwill, no sore loser gesture. Contestants may register starting 10:30 a.m. at 9th St. Beach. Fireworks, Shell Pitching and Plopping Coming Your Way

Residents and visitors will enjoy an additional FIREWORKS SHOW this season, a gigantic display ignited from a barge off the 9th Street Beach on Sat., Aug. 24. The event is a thank you to everyone who supported us this season in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. It also recognizes the quick action by the City and the work of our many volunteer groups like OCNJ.CARE that made a quick recovery possible. The event begins 7:30 p.m. in front of the Music Pier, reports Michele Gillian, executive director of the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce. It will begin with a program of non denominational “prayer and song” by local clergy and choirs. An August Thanksgiving in Ocean City

A THANKFUL RESORT WILL CELEBRATE WITH FIREWORKS & MORE Ocean City will celebrate Thanksgiving twice this year. Later in November but first on Saturday, August 24 when it will treat its loyal vacationers to an evening of entertainment capped by a gigantic fireworks display. “We have a lot to be thankful for,” declared Michele Gillian, executive director of the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce. “First we were able to bounce back quickly from Hurricane Sandy, thanks to immediate and decisive action by the City and the efforts of an army of volunteers headed by OCNJ.CARE. Assistance Centers were set up immediately in order to feed and clothe those in need. Unusual Events Plentiful in Ocean City This Week

August 7th: Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant followed by the King of Klutz Crab races. Event starts 1 p.m. in the volley ball section of the 6th St. Beach. Glamorous Crabettes, many on colorful displays, vie for the Coveted Cucumber Rind Cup, symbol of Crustacean comeliness. Past winners include such legends as Crabunzel, Crabopatra, Copacrabana and Pirates of the Crabibbean. Winner creeps down a flower bedecked runway while all sing “Here It Comes, Miss Crustacean.” The Pageant is followed by the rollicking, King of Klutz Races with about 150 crabathletes creeping and clunking over an 8 ft. plywood oval.
