4th of July, Night in Venice Will Be Here Soon

The 4th OF JULY is a little more than one week away, and NIGHT IN VENICE is early this year on July 11th, about two weeks away.

Let’s review the basics of these important upcoming events: The 4th of July Fireworks are set for 10 p.m. They will be fired from the Ocean close to the Music Pier and will be visible from the beach and boardwalk.

There will be two bike Parades starting at 10 a.m. The SOUTH OCEAN CITY Parade: registration at 9 a.m. at 40th and Asbury, starts at 40th and Central. Goes south on Central to the 52nd St. Playground. The GARDENS CIVIC ASSN. Parade: Registration at 9 a.m. at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot with a route through the Gardens. Entry in both Parades is free.

The annual KITE FESTIVAL Competition: Registration is free at 6 p.m. with 7:30 p.m. Awards for Kite Categories and Age Divisions. There will be an 8 p.m. Yo Yo Demonstration and contest and an 8:30 p.m. HULA HOOP Contest. All events are free and held between the Music Pier and 10th Street on the Beach. Sponsored by Air Circus.

NOTE: On July 1, the Ocean City Pops Orchestra will present an inspiring program featuring favorite Sousa marches and patriotic selections honoring our country. Todd Thomas and the Pops Singers will honor the brave men and women dedicated to preserving our freedom at this special concert, 8 p.m. at Music Pier. Julia Wilson, an intermediate school student, will sing the Star Spangled Banner and will appear with Ocean City Boy Scout Troop #32 who will present the colors. NIGHT IN VENICE, July 11th starting 6 p.m. “Dancing Under the Stars” is the optional theme for the 61st Annual Night In Venice Boat Parade and Bay front Home Celebration.

The decorated boats, many featuring music, begin by the Longport Bridge at the North point of the Island and sails along the Bay in and out of Lagoons to 23rd St. Several hundred Bay front homes will also be showcased. Both homes and boats will compete for prizes. Entry in the competition is free. All boat owners will receive a complimentary photo of their boat in the Parade and a $50 decoration card.

The dancing theme will be represented on a commemorative mug given to all boat and home contestants in the popular event.  Grand Marshal will be John Stauffer, owner of Johnson’s Popcorn, celebrating its 75th Anniversary in Ocean City. One of the City’s Boardwalk landmarks, Johnson’s will distribute fun items to both land and water entrants.

The Channel 6 Action news weather team and a legendary member of the Philadelphia Flyers will also be featured in the Parade.

(June 24-26) Our July Jubilee “Wacky but not Tacky Contests are now under way. Wed., June 24 contestants are challenged to sculpt a 12 inch cookie into a work of art. A Super hero impersonation contest is also scheduled and this year Super Villains such as Cat Women have been included. Thursday contestants sculpt paper clips and Friday BEADAMANIA is scheduled. Entrants will make a necklace or bracelet out of beads.

All contests start 11 a.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Entry is free. Prizes are awarded. The competition is divided into age groups 5 years and under, 6-8, 9-12, Teens and adults.

(June 24) BROADWAY ON THE BOARDWALK: The Greater Ocean City Theatre Company celebrates Broadway and its 8th Anniversary of bringing outstanding musical programs to Ocean City. The production stars Carly Hughes currently featured as Velma Kelly in the Broadway production of CHICAGO. Her Broadway credits also include roles in Pippin, Ghost the Musical, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and many others. Tickets are $25 Orchestra and $20 Solarium. (June 26-27) Friends and Volunteers of the Ocean City Free Public Library SUMMER BOOK SALE, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Library, 17th and Simpson Ave.

(June 27) Mayor Gillian will hold a town meeting, 1 p.m. at the Howard Stainton Senior Center, 1735 Simpson Ave. He will be joined by Council members. The meeting is being held to exchange information about current and pending circumstances concerning the issues affecting back bay dredging in Ocean City. For information, call (609) 525-9333.

(June 27) The PHILADELPHIA WIND ENSEMBLE: Philadelphia’s premier concert band, entertains with audience favorites and marches. Featuring Philadelphia trumpeter, David Bilger, in the popular “Carnival in Venice.” Sponsored by John D. Pojawis, Jr., CPA. (July 9) The Ocean City Historical Museum’s Sindia Miniature Golf Day will be held at Playland’s Seaport Village Golf Course between 9th and 10th Streets on the Boardwalk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Play a free round of golf and learn about the wreck of the Sindia.  Free tickets must be picked up at Museum, 17th and Simpson Ave., reports Fred Miller, Ocean City Historian.
