8/12/15 Baby Parade Thursday, Little Miss Ocean City Friday

All of a sudden it’s the middle of August and time for the BABY PARADE! The 106th edition is set for Thursday, starting 5:30 p.m. The route is 6th to 12th St. on the Boardwalk. It is the longest continuously running Baby Parade in the world.

Didn’t register yet? Entries are being taken the day of the Parade from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Sports and Civic Center, 6th and Boardwalk. The Parade is open to children from infants to ten years of age. You will see colorful entries in Kiddie Cars, Coaches, Strollers, Express wagons and floats. Registration is $5 per child. Prizes are awarded and all entrants receive a memento for participating in the parade.

There will be music by the Pitman Hobo Band, Atlantic City Fire Department Bagpipers, Ed Coles Dixieland Band and Michael Hartman’s Greater Ocean City Theatre Company. Grand Marshal will be Nicole Brewer of CBS-3TV. For information, call (609) 399-6111.

WEIRD CONTEST WEEK is underway at the Music Pier, with the action beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday we feature Paper Clip Sculpting. Believe it or not we have had representations of the Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building and reading glasses emerge from paper clips.

Final contests on Friday include Little Miss and Little Mister Chaos. Children from 3 to 5 years of age are encouraged to make as much noise as possible banging on pots and pans. They are accompanied by lively recorded music. The contests conclude with the Mister and Miss Miscellaneous Pageants. These are talent competitions for all those who have always wanted to compete in one by have been thwarted by twists of fate like missing the bus or being stuck at a Rugby Game.

(Aug. 14) LITTLE MISS OCEAN CITY PAGEANT: at Music Pier, 7 p.m. featuring reigning Little Miss, Hope Aita, who has been an outstanding representative of the City at many special events. (Aug. 17) RUSTED ROOT is a band from Pittsburgh, Pa., known for their unique fusion of acoustic, rock, world and other styles of music. They have a strong percussion section and have sold over 3 million records worldwide. Opening the show will be Chris Barron lead singer of the Spin Doctors. At the Monday Night Boardwalk Concert Series, Ocean City Music Pier. (Aug. 26) BOSTON BRASS Returns to the Music Pier. (Sept. 4) KING & QUEEN OF PLOP COMPETITION. Ocean City has an unusual way of welcoming the fall season. Four years ago we initiated a Mr. Fall Gal and Fall Girl Competition the event will be held at 11 a.m. on the 9th St. Beach opposite the Music Pier. Contestants are asked to greet the fall season, always a lovely time, by falling dramatically and in slow motion to the sand. Those performing the most dramatic renditions will be crowned the King and Queen of Plop. Event features a performance by the World’s Only Wind Chimes Band and some celebrity ploppers. Registration begins 10:30 a.m. on the 9th Street Beach. Entry is free. Prizes will be awarded. Call (609) 399-6111.

FUNTASTIC TUESDAYS: Held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Asbury Avenue features free balloon sculptors, face painters, fun for the entire family. Also, there are 100 fine specialty stores to investigate. Plus numerous restaurants in the downtown where you can have breakfast or lunch while enjoying the free stuff.

MUMMERS NIGHT: Also on Tuesdays, enjoy Mummers Night on the Boardwalk, with String Bands strutting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Enjoy a great evening on Ocean City’s Award Winning Boardwalk. Sponsored by Shriver’s, Ocean Paradise, Prep’s Pizza, and Henry’s.

BEACH WALKS: Also on Tuesdays and Wednesdays take an informative and pleasant guided beach walk for a nominal price. Walk starts at South End Location, 59th and Central Ave. at the entrance to Corson’s Park, Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. There’s a Walk from the north end starting at the Longport Bridge Parking lot (Gardens Parkway) Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. Tickets are available on site, Adults $1, Children 50 cents.

FARMERS MARKET: Held at Tabernacle Grounds every Wednesday with crafters on Asbury Ave. at 6th St., 8 a.m.-1 p.m. You can stroll free and buy stuff at economical prices now through Sept. 9th.

MARKET DAYS: Every Thursday through  the end of August on Asbury Ave. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Includes free entertainment (magicians, etc.) free face painters and balloon sculptors plus free pony rides for the kids at the Tabernacle, 6th and Asbury Ave.

HISTORIC AND INN-TO-INN TOURS: presented by the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers of Ocean City are every Thursday in July and August from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.  Tickets are $14 per person, which includes transportation by trolley and a guided tour.  Catch the trolley at the Ticket Booth located at the 7th Street and Central Avenue parking lot (metered parking is available).  Tickets are available at the Welcome Center on the Rt.52 Causeway and at the ticket booth.  Each tour is different and includes an excursion to four different historic locations which may include inns, the Historic Flanders Hotel, the Historic Ocean City Lifesaving Station, the Ocean City Historical Museum, or a Beachwalk and a sightseeing tour of the City’s historic district. For more information, please call 609-399-1412 or visit on the internet at www.OceanCityVacation.com.

CHARACTER NIGHTS: Every Sunday through August Ocean City’s colorful Boardwalk Mascots will sign autographs and pose for photos at 6 p.m. in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.  Sponsored by Manco and Manco’s Pizza, Surf Mall, and Jilly’s.
