9/11 Ceremony, 2 Air Shows, and Car Show this Week

The City will once again remember and honor those who lost their lives during the September 11th attacks of 2001. Over 3,000 people died as the result of the attacks including civilians, fire fighters, first responders and police officers.

The program will be held in front of the Fire House at 6th and Asbury Ave. starting 7 p.m. It will begin with the “Striking of the Four Fives” by the Ocean City Fire and Rescue Services. Ocean City Boy Scout Troop 32 will present the colors.  The Flag Salute will be led by Bob Marzulli, Commander of American Legion Post 524 and Clark Manley of the VFW. Members of the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company will lead in the singing of the National Anthem.

Rev. John Jamieson, Ocean City Fire Department Chaplain, will present the invocation followed by Michael Dattilo who will introduce dignitaries. Michael Morrissey, Commander of VFW Post 6650, will be the keynote speaker. There will be the laying of a wreath by Ocean City Police and Fire Department Representatives. The program will be concluded with Remarks and Benediction by Rev. Drena Money Garrett of St. James AME and the rendition of “God Bless America” by Julia Mary Wilson.

NOTE: Ocean City High School football will recognize the anniversary of the 9-11 Terrorist attacks at its home opener against Absegami High School at Carey Stadium. Prior to the 7 p.m. kick-off both high schools will walk onto the field with family, friends and guests who are serving or have served in the armed forces and as first responders.

(Sept. 12) The first of two free City AIR FESTIVALS is set for the Municipal Airport, 26th and Bay Ave. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature ground displays of a B-25J Mitchell Bomber and World War II Grumman TBM Avenger. There will be air demonstrations, a paper airplane contest for children, Face Painting and Food Vendors.

There will be ground displays of a variety of aircraft plus Military Vehicles and Antique cars. The NJ Pine Barons RC Club will present exciting model airplane demonstrations with miniature jets soaring at 100 miles per hour. Helicopter and Airplane rides will be available for purchase. (Sept. 12) STREET ROD EXHIBITION: This popular show features modified, classic cars on display. The one day exhibition will be featured on the Tabernacle Grounds, 550 Wesley Ave. from 8 a.m. until noon, and then shown on the Boardwalk until 4 p.m. Call (609) 399-6111 for information.

(Sept. 14) 20th Annual Sunshine Foundation GOLF CLASSIC: Benefits the organization that for over 38 years has granted the wishes of 37,000 seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children. (Sept. 16) The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce roasts MICHAEL HARTMAN, founder and director of the Greater Ocean City THEATRE COMPANY. Michael has brought Broadway quality shows to Ocean City. His company also offers theatre camps and theatrical training to youth and gives them the opportunity to perform in productions at the Music Pier and Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center. Michael frequently teams with the Ocean City Pops to stage Broadway Shows.

(Sept. 26) WALK FOR THE WOUNDED:  A three mile walk on the boardwalk to raise money for wounded soldiers returning from overseas.
