Boardwalk Art Show and Baby Parade Coming Soon

What’s Happening in Ocean City, NJ 8/3/16

(Aug. 5-7) Ocean City’s 54th annual BOARDWALK ART SHOW is set for Aug. 5 to 7 from 8th to 13th Streets on the Boardwalk.  Admission is free. This is an event where buyers can obtain quality art at reasonable prices.  Artwork in the following mediums will be for sale: oils, acrylics, watercolors, mixed media and photography.

Artists will be displaying their work from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Artists from throughout the country participate in the event. Many offer scenes of Ocean City.

The Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave., is featuring abstract mixed media artist, SCOTT TROXELL, in its exhibit hall through August. The event is free and open to the public. Call (609) 399-7628.

The Ocean City Fine Arts League, 608 Asbury Ave. is featuring a display celebrating “SUMMERTIME” through August.  Admission to the show is free. Artwork is for sale. Call (609) 814-0308. Open every day.

(Aug. 11) Ocean City’s 107th annual BABY PARADE starts 5 p.m. and goes from 6th to 14th Streets on the Boardwalk. (Children’s entries only exit at 12th St.)  There are three Divisions: A – for children in fancy decorated Go-Carts, Strollers; B – Children in comic decorated Go-carts and strollers; C – Small Children’s Floats-measuring more the 3×5 ft. All children who participate will receive a small trophy.  Additional awards will be given to the best entries in each division.  The Parade is a treat for spectators as entries are traditionally elaborate and imaginative. Music will be provided by numerous bands including the lively InterBoro High School Band of Pennsylvania and the always entertaining Pitman Hobo Band of Pitman, New Jersey.

(Aug.4-6) ART OF SURFING FESTIVAL: This event features artists displaying and selling work related to surfing in various mediums. Admission is free. There will be live music at night. (Aug. 4) Ocean City Fishing Pier OPEN HOUSE: 6 to 8 p.m. The Ocean City Fishing Club invites shutterbugs and other visitors to tour its pier and clubhouse, 14th Street and Boardwalk. Visitors will be able to make a donation of canned goods to support the Ocean City Food Cupboard.

(Aug. 4) The Ocean City Historical Museum FREE lecture series hosts Police Chief Chad Callahan.  Chief Callahan will be speaking about the HISTORY OF THE OCEAN CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT.  Join us at 7 p.m. in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall of the Library at 1735 Simpson Avenue.

(Aug. 6) ESA SURFING CONTEST: 7TH Street Beach, sign-ups begin at 7 a.m. and the first heat in the water begins 8 a.m. Sign up at the beach the morning of the contest. (Aug. 7) “PUT ON A HAPPY FACE,” Dick Van Dyke’s 90th Birthday Tribute by the Ocean City Pops. This special staged concert will celebrate the prestigious career of beloved actor, singer and dancer, from his career changing Broadway turn in “Bye Bye Birdie,” his dead-panned humor in “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and  his unforgettable Bert in “Mary Poppins.” He will be portrayed by Tony nominee Gavin Lee along with Sean MacLaughlin and Sarah Pfisterer.  8 p.m. at the Music Pier. (Aug. 8) SUSTAINABLE GREEN FAIR: The Green Fair is a community-wide event meant to educate and encourage people of all ages to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. (Aug. 8) THE MACHINE IN CONCERT: Show time 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk. As one of America’s most acclaimed Pink Floyd Tribute Bands, the Machine has spent over 25 years honing their craft and it’s paid off. Spin Magazine confirms they sound “exactly like Pink Floyd.” Combining elaborate details, the band faithfully recreates Pink Floyd’s legendary live shows. (Aug. 9) PAMPER SCAMPER: The popular, annual baby-crawling  event starts  with a 9 a.m. registration.  9:30 a.m. races start at the 6th Street Beach. For babies up to 15 months. Entry is free. For information, (609) 399-6111.

(Aug. 9-10-11) DISNEY’S  “THE LITTLE MERMAID”:  In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel longs to leave her ocean home and live in the world above. Based on Disney’s classic animated film, it features music by Alan Menken. The POPS and Ocean City Theatre Company present this delightful musical love story for the whole family. (Aug. 13) 41st ANNUAL BOYS AND GIRLS SURF FISHING TOURNAMENT: 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the north end beach, adjacent to the Ocean City/ Longport Bridge. Registration 9 a.m.-10 a.m. in the Longport Bridge Parking Lot.  Fishing is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Parental supervision required. Participants must bring their own bait. Age groups: 8-10, 11-13, 14-16. Awards for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place in each age group. On-going casting and fishing instruction will be provided during the tournament.
