Welcome Night, Halloween Parade, Frankenstein This Week

Two, popular, long running Ocean City events and a brand new one are set for this week in Ocean City and all are free: (Wed., Oct. 23) The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce presents WELCOME NIGHT at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, from 6 to 8 p.m. Ocean City organizations, groups and businesses meet with residents to acquaint them with their services and products.  It is a pleasant evening that includes giveaways, refreshments, and door prizes plus lots of valuable information about the community. Welcome Night was begun over 40 years ago. It was originally held at the old Ocean City High School in the cafeteria. Its popularity has never waned. It is especially helpful to new residents. Trail of Two Cities a Popular Event for Both Runners and Walkers

Ocean City’s TRAIL OF TWO CITIES 5K Run/Walk over the new Causeway between Ocean City and Somers Point on Nov. 2 provides a spectacular experience for both runners and walkers alike. If you’re a runner you get to test your endurance over the high inclines of the bridges. If you’re a walker you are able to enjoy the scenic wetlands, and bay plus a panoramic view of the City. Bring a camera and wow your friends with some great photos. The run is open to all ages from 9 and under to 70 and over. Block Party Weekend Attracts Thousands to Ocean City

Ocean City celebrates one of its most popular events, the Indian Summer Weekend, for the 39th time Oct. 12-14. Centerpiece of the event is the mile-long FALL BLOCK PARTY that extends from 5th to 14th Sts. on Asbury Ave. on Sat., Oct. 12 and attracts more than 40,000 visitors. Over 350 juried crafters from throughout the east coast participate in the block party. An array of hand made products will be featured. Block Party hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A huge fireworks display is scheduled following the block party. The fireworks are fired from a barge off the 9th St. Beach at 9:30 p.m. There will be entertainment on the boardwalk all evening prior to the fireworks. Block party events include a variety of foods. Frankenstein Arrives at Library, Hero Walk Sunday

Ah, Frankenstein! Such fond memories… He was the horror celebrity of my childhood. Then along came the Wolf Man, another memorable demon. These two were to clash in a monstrous battle royal movie “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.” Such excitement in our Chester, Pa. neighborhood! We argued about it for weeks at Franklin Grammar School. Who would win? The smart money was on Frankenstein. After all he was a huge figure constructed with heavy-duty nuts and bolts. The Wolf Man was just a regular guy who turned hairy and grew fangs during a full moon. As I recall Frankenstein was victorious. More importantly these two monsters were portrayed by great actors. City Hosts Three Humanitarian Events This Week

Ocean City is known for its support of charitable and humanitarian events. Last year over $30 million was raised by organizations that held events here.  These ranged from the Heart Assn. to charities assisting our armed service personnel. This week Ocean City will host three events: The MS Bike Tour, The Walk for the Wounded and The Run for the Fallen: (Sept. 27) The NJ Run for the Fallen honors service members who fought and died in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn. Relay teams will run from Cape May Light House and cover 172 miles ending at the N.J. Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel on Friday. Huge Corvette Show on Boardwalk Sunday

(Sept. 22) Over 350 CORVETTES will roll into Ocean City on Sunday. The huge show will include all Corvette models ever produced. The Boardwalk Corvette Club reports the display will stretch from 5th to 14th Streets on the boardwalk. The exhibit is scheduled from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. No bikes will be permitted in the area during this time. The Boardwalk Corvette Club will also have cars exhibited on the concrete area in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. The Show's theme this year is "Jersey Strong." Sept. 11 Ceremony, Two Free Air Shows Set for This Week

(Sept. 11) The City’s annual SEPTEMBER 11TH Ceremony will be held on Wednesday starting 6 p.m. at the Fire House grounds, 6th and Asbury Ave.  Keynote speaker will be Mayor Jay A. Gillian and there will be an invocation and remarks by Rev. Brian Roberts, St. Peter’s UMC. The L/Cpl. George Dramis Marine Corps  Color Guard will present the colors, Julia Mary Wilson will sing the National Anthem and the Flag Salute will be led by Bob Marzulli, Commander of the American Legion Post and Michael Morrissey,  Commander of the VFW. Ocean City Chief of Fire and Rescue Services, Christopher Breunig, will open the program with the Striking of the Four Fives. Laying of the wreath will be by City Police and Fire representatives. Street Rods Arrive in Time for Smokey Joe’s Cafe

(Sept. 6-8)  STREET RODS, colorful, classic cars, return to Ocean City this weekend. The vehicles arrive starting Friday at noon and depart Sunday at 1p.m. following an awards ceremony. They will be on display at the Tabernacle Grounds, 6th and Asbury Ave., a new location this year. On Saturday the Street Rods will be displayed on the Boardwalk from noon till 4 p.m. The Street Rodders will arrive just in time to enjoy Ocean City Theatre Company’s performances of “SMOKEY JOE’S Café, set for Sept. 6-7 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, 7:30 p.m. Call (609) 525-9300 for information. King and Queen of Plop set for August 30th in Ocean City

For the past five years this family resort has held the KING & QUEEN of PLOP Contest. Participants demonstrate dramatic plops on the sand to illustrate their enthusiasm for the fall, a beautiful time in Ocean City with many special events. On Fri., Aug. 30, a group of “right proper ploppers” will vie for the title of the King and Queen of Plop or Mr. Fall Guy or Miss Fall Gal.
