REMINDERS Aug. 11: Ocean City's 102nd BABY PARADE is set for Thurs., Aug. 11 starting 10:15 a.m. Route is from 6th to 12th Sts. on the Boardwalk. The Baby Parade will be followed by the popular TWINS CONTEST starting 6:30 p.m. in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Registration is 6 p.m. There are divisions for all age groups. Entry is free. Prizes will be awarded. It’s Less Than Two Weeks Till Night in Venice. Register Now For Contests!

July 16: NIGHT IN VENICE is early this year: July 16, less than two weeks away. It’s time to register your boat or home for the annual competition. The Boat Parade begins 6:30 p.m. by the Longport Bridge and ends at Tennessee Ave. Optional theme this year is Broadway on the Bay. Entry is free. There will be cash prizes for all who enter boats plus trophies for boat winners and best decorated homes. Boat participants will receive $50 cash cards to enhance decorations providing they finish the Parade. Miss New Jersey, Father’s Day Fest This Week, July Jubilee Next

REMINDER: The Miss New Jersey Parade will be held on Wed., June 15 starting 7 p.m. Route will be 6th to 14th Sts. on the Boardwalk. (June 16-18) Twenty-three title holders from throughout the State will compete for the MISS NEW JERSEY crown, June 16-18. The Pageant will be held in the Music Pier Auditorium, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, with shows starting at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the Miss New Jersey Pageant will vie for the Miss America crown this coming January in Las Vegas. OCIS4ME, O2BNOC-2, OCDRMN, AHHOC: 23 License Plate Winners Announced

Ocean City's License Plate contest attracted an array of entries. Judges selected those they considered the 23 best. These were divided into two categories, Ocean City Promotional and Ocean City Affection. Winners and Runners Up have been named in both categories. The Winners in each category will receive framed plaques and the Runners Up, Certificates of Appreciation. The majority of entries were by email and many did not give hometown addresses. These winners will be notified by email. Many of those who entered told stories of visiting Ocean City for years, then eventually buying second homes or permanent residences because they loved the community so much. Weird Contest Week Continues, Little Miss OC on Saturday

WEIRD CONTEST WEEK continues today, August 19 with Clip Art (make something meaningful out of paper clips) plus Ears Looking At You Kid, an ear wiggling contest, held for the first time at the Jersey Shore or any place else in the Universe as far as we know. (We googled Ear Wiggling Contests) and could find nothing. The event concludes on Friday, Aug. 20 with Miss Miscellaneous and Mister Miscellaneous plus Little Miss and Mister Chaos. The Miscellaneous Contests are for anyone who’s always wanted to be in a talent pageant but maybe missed the bus or got stuck at a rugby game. Pet Fashion Show to Help Raise Funds for Humane Society

Our popular Woofin' Paws Pet Fashion show normally attracts over 100 entrants. An array of dogs, cats and miscellaneous creatures, obediently accompanied by their best friends, will compete for ribbons, Sat., April 3 starting 11 a.m. at Carey Stadium, 6th St. off boardwalk. The event kicks off an array of Easter Weekend activities. Woofn’ Paws has always been a fund raiser for the Ocean City Humane Society. It takes on added significance this year as the Society has been working to capacity for months due to the Recession. The facility is completely filled with dogs and cats from owners who can no longer afford to care for them. City Talent Show, Airforce Big Band Here in March

We've just received word that U.S. AIR FORCE BAND OF LIBERTY Jazz Band will perform at the Music Pier on Sat., March 6 at 7 p.m. One week later, March 13, the 7th Annual City Talent Show is set for the Pier starting at 6 p.m. The Air Force Jazz Band is currently touring the East Coast. You can expect an exciting program ranging from the traditions of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington to the contemporary jazz-pop sounds of today. The program is free but you must pick up complimentary tickets in advance. This has been the case with all of the Service bands we have hosted in the past. To paraphrase Waylon and Willie: "Momma don't let your babies grow up to be poets." Not if you want them to take care of you in your old age. This is my long awaited, feverishly anticipated annual poetry column. I will use the space to touch on my long career in writing verse and how it has affected me psychologically and financially. I believe I wrote my first poem at the age of nine.
