Arlo Guthrie at Music Pier Plus Many More Events Set

As the 100th Anniversary of WOODY GUTHRIE’S birth draws near, tributes to the folk troubadour, humanitarian and rambling man are planned from as far away as Austria and Germany with hundreds of thousands participating. Ocean City will present its own tribute on Mon., July 16th, when ARLO GUTHRIE, Woody’s renowned son accompanied by talented family members, entertain at 8 p.m. in the Music Pier Auditorium, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Woody Guthrie wrote about 3,000 songs, one of which, This Land Is Your Land, has become immensely popular and is sung widely in this country and throughout the world. Arlo at 65 continues to perform. He is one of the nation’s great folk singers and an entertaining story teller like his father. Ocean City’s Third Tribute to the Philippines Features Trade Fesitval and Entertainment

OCEAN CITY’S THIRD TRIBUTE TO THE PHILIPPINES FEATURES TRADE FESTIVAL AND ENTERTAINMENT OCEAN CITY, N.J. --- A trade festival featuring Filipino crafts, products and services plus a 5 p.m. show with the Sounds of Manila, a popular Filipino band, will highlight the City’s third annual Tribute to the Philippines, July 21-22. The major sponsor of the event is Western Union. The show will also include and array of prominent Filipino entertainers. National Yo Yo Champions, affiliated with Air Circus of Ocean City, will open the show with unique routines to dance music. The Yo Yo was invented in the Philippines and means “Return! Return!” in the Filipino language. The trade festival will be held in the Pavilion area of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Famer Named Boat Parade Grand Marshal

Ocean City resident, Dick Richards, a recent inductee into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, will be grand marshal of Ocean City’s 58th annual Night In Venice, Sat., July 28. Richards was the original drummer of Bill Haley’s legendary Comets. He recorded Rock Around the Clock and Shake Rattle and Roll with Haley two songs that made Rock ‘n Roll history. Now in his eighties, Richards still performs with today’s version of the Comets. Regulars at Branson, Missouri, the group tours Europe every year where they are immensely popular. Pops, Choir, Antique Cars, Tony Mart this Week, July Jubilee Next

Many events are scheduled for Ocean City this week but first a word about NIGHT IN VENICE. Entry forms are now available for the colorful boat parade and bay front home celebration and competition scheduled for Sat. July 28 starting 7 p.m. The Parade begins at the Longport Bridge and concludes at Tennessee and Bay Ave.   Optional decorating theme this year is "Do You Remember When?" But contestants are free to select any theme they prefer.   Once again all boat entrants will receive $50 gas cards, collector's mugs and a photo of their boat taken in the Parade. Miss New Jersey this Week, July Jubilee on the Way

(June 13-16)  The MISS NEW JERSEY Pageant returns to Ocean City this week with its Boardwalk Parade on June 13 and the Pageant, June 14-16 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. The Parade begins 7:30 p.m. Its route is from 6th to 14th Sts. on the Boardwalk. The event features 25 contestants who will dress depicting various nursery rhyme themes. It will be led by Katharyn Nicolle, Miss New Jersey. Miss Ocean City, Brenna Carnuccio, Junior Miss Ocean City, Kylie Clearkin and Little Miss Ocean City, Cassidy Diamond will ride in the parade. There will be music, marching groups, a calliope and even a unique Stanley Steamer in this outstanding event directed by Maribeth Neall. Artisans Visit Ocean City for 67th Time, Miss New Jersey Next

 The ARTISANS Order of Mutual Protection returns to Ocean City for the 67th time this weekend. They hold the record for consecutive visits to Ocean City.The Artisans will present the Miss Artisans Pageant at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace 8 p.m., Sat., June 9. The contest selects the young lady who will represent them for the coming year. There will be entertainment by popular Philadelphia duo, Gary and the Kid. Admission is free. The Public is invited. The Artisans Order of Mutual Protection was founded 139 years ago to provide affordable insurance for working people. The organization also supports many charitable causes. Ocean City Flower Show Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Ocean City FLOWER SHOW is a testament to volunteerism in Ocean City. The popular event was initiated 40 years ago in 1972 through the efforts of the late, legendary businessman, James F. Penland. He convinced then Mayor B. Thomas Waldman that a Flower Show would be good for the City. Waldman agreed and provided City resources to make the event possible. But the show could never have been held without the assistance and expertise of the Garden Club of Ocean City. Penland realized this and solicited the help of the group who have been running the event to this day. They are all volunteers.The Flower Show costs the City little to nothing as the Club produces an advertising book, collects voluntary donations at the door and runs a commercial trade fair.... Read More

Memorial Day Weekend Events in Ocean City

(Fri., May 25) UNLOCKING OF THE OCEAN! Mayor Jay Gillian will turn a key in the sand as various dignitaries, lifeguards and bathers look on. The purpose? To unlock the ocean for another season. This is a ritual that many shore resorts have repeated for decades. But this year something new will be added inOceanCity. Think about it. Who benefits the most when the ocean is unlocked? Hmmmm! Why the fish of course! Now they can swim here legitimately without fear of getting ticketed. It is a time of great rejoicing for our finny friends! Wall of Honor to be Updated During Memorial Day Ceremony in Ocean City

Information and plaques on The Wall of Honor at Veterans Memorial Park, 5th and Wesley Ave., will be updated during MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES, Mon., May 28 at 11 a.m. The Wall honors Ocean City residents who have sacrificed their lives in the service of the United States during World War I and II, the Korean War and Vietnam. Jim Houck, Past Commander and Judge Advocate of American Legion Post 524, has completed extensive research on those killed in action. He has authored a booklet with a history of each honoree’s service. The booklet will be given to those who attend the Memorial Day Ceremony.
