July Jubilee was started over 20 years ago when Elsie Gillespie, then president of the Chamber of Commerce, wanted to treat vacationers arriving early for the 4th of July to an interesting time. When she called me, I suggested that we repeat contests from our popular Weird Week held in August.

And so it came to pass, that the last week in June was designated July Jubilee by Elsie. One contest is held daily, 11 a.m. in the Pavilion of the Music Pier. Entry is free. The age divisions include five and under, 6-8, 9-12 teens and adults. Ribbons are awarded to the winners, everyone receives a free ticket to one ride at Wonderland and a participation ribbon.

The contest line up includes Taffy Sculpting on Mon. courtesy of Shriver’s; French Fry Sculpting on Tues., thanks to the Promenade and That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles on Wed., with an humongous 12 inch diameter cookie from Ward’s Pastry to chew into a work of art. Wednesday also includes a Super Hero dress up contest featuring Suzanne Muldowney as Super Girl. This is Superman’s 70th anniversary which makes the contest especially relevant.

Thursday is Clip Art Day with participants devising clever entries like the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge and airplanes from paper clips. Friday is Extreme Hermit Crab Wrestling, extremely non violent. Hermit Crabs are placed on their shells and the first one to turn over on its claws is declared the winner. Contestants must bring their own crabs. For information, call (609) 525-9300.

The theme of the City’s 41st Annual Flower Show,May 31st to June 2nd at the Music Pier will be “Let’s Go to the Movies.” This turns out to be very appropriate in more ways than one. Not only does it provide a fine category for the show’s Artistic Design Division but it could well underscore the resurgence of family movies taking place at the Moorlyn Theatre in Ocean City thanks to the Ocean City Tabernacle. The Theatre will open again for movies on Memorial Day Weekend and for live entertainment July 1st with “Oh What A Night,” a musical tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

The theme of the City’s 41st Annual Flower Show,May 31st to June 2nd at the Music Pier will be “Let’s Go to the Movies.” This turns out to be very appropriate in more ways than one.
The popular plunge is the way City merchants and organizations celebrate the coming of a new season. In dramatic fashion, dressed in business suits and sporting other unusual costumes, they smart step into the sea. This year they will march to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance played by the Ocean City High School Band standing on the sidelines.

The action begins at noon on Fri., May 24 on the sands opposite the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.

Walton is enthusiastic about the event declaring there will be a record number of participants on the 24th.

“Future business students from Ocean City High School will enter Brigades,” says Walton. At the other end of the spectrum, 88 year old Betty Trout, representing Brown’s Restaurant on the Boardwalk, will take the plunge.

Among the new entries will be the Ocean City Exchange Club represented by Frank McCall; Winnie Piriano’s South Jersey Home Care; Roz Lifshin, representing the Ocean City Arts Center and Sun Rose Book Store; George Loeper, for the City’s Historical Museum; Yoghurt Land’s Michael Haines; Nichole Foxman for Stainton’s Gallery of Shops; Tina Spadafora of Yoasis and Sheikh of Ocean City Wireless Variety Store.

Doug Jewell of Air Circus will blow a tinny tune on his bugle to signal the start of the annual seaside frolic. The colorful contingent will be led by Walton carrying an American flag. Beside Walton will flutter a flag declaring that Ocean City is Ready and Open for the season.

“We want to emphasize that the community is back in business following Super Storm Sandy and ready to serve its many vacationers,’ says Walton.

Prior to the plunge, the Cumberland Regional High School Chorus led by Ed Sayre will serenade spectators. They will be followed by City officials and members of the Beach Patrol who will turn a large, wooden key in the sand to officially open the ocean. Local fish will rejoice because it will be legal for them to swim in City waters again.

When I returned to the office, I asked Jean Mimnaugh, my co-worker, what she thought about having a block party in the downtown with entertainment and food, etc. Jean then provided the key to the long term success of the event. “Crafters,” she said, you should have crafters, “and I know a lot of them.” Thirty years later, we have over 400 crafters, plus downtown merchants’ tables, plus food, entertainment, pony rides for the children and public service displays.

In 1983 Ocean City was looking for events to bolster tourism in the Spring. We had tried boat shows in the downtown that weren’t particularly successful. Then I happened to be driving in the north end of the City and noticed that residents were planning to celebrate repairs to their street with a neighborhood block party.

When I returned to the office, I asked Jean Mimnaugh, my co-worker, what she thought about having a block party in the downtown with entertainment and food, etc. Jean then provided the key to the long term success of the event. “Crafters,” she said, you should have crafters, “and I know a lot of them.”

Thirty years later, we have over 400 crafters, plus downtown merchants’ tables, plus food, entertainment, pony rides for the children and public service displays. Jean Mimnaugh has passed away, but her inspired idea was the reason the block party took off like a rocket.

The spring block party was so successful that four years later, Norman Bock, the president of the Retail Merchants Assn., asked us to schedule a block party in the fall to coincide with the Columbus Day Weekend. This turned out to be another fine idea, and the fall Block Party also became an event that attracted thousands of visitors.

One other person also deserves immense credit for the success of the Block Parties. That’s Carolyn Murphy, who operated Boyd’s TV for many years with her husband, Charles. Carolyn took on the huge job of running both block parties for the Retail Merchants’ Assn. By time she took over the events had grown into huge festivals attracting over 60,000 persons. It was a year-round job for Carolyn. But she did it all while also running the family business until she passed away a few years ago.

It has taken many people to make our block parties a success and keep them going over the years. The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce now very efficiently handles the events. And there is plenty of assistance provided by City’s Public Works, Police and other Departments.

This spring’s mile long block party is set for this Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. extending from 5th to 14th Streets on Asbury Ave. Over 100 downtown shops will be open, many with table sales. The downtown merchants will also have a sidewalk sale on Sun., May 5th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Please note that the downtown entertainment and pony rides at the Tabernacle during the Block Party will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The wrong time was listed in this column last week.)

(May 1) Last Minute Reminder: The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce holds its Salute to Working Women, noon at the Ocean City Yacht Club. Call (609) 399-1412 for info.

(May 2) Martin Z. Mollusk Day: Our relatively famous Hermit Crab is scheduled to attempt to see his shadow at 11 a.m. at the 9th St. Beach adjacent to the Music Pier. (The event will definitely be held there as the dredge will not be in the area.)

(May 5) MS WALK; Registration begins 9 a.m. at the Sports and Civic Center, 6th and Boardwalk. Walk starts 10 a.m. The event raises money “ to stop Multiple Sclerosis in its tracks.” Funds raised serve over 14,000 area families. For information, call (215) 271-1500 or visit www.walk4ms.org.

(May 7) The Ocean City High School Instrumental Dept. presents its annual Spring CONCERT 7 p.m. at the Hughes Performing Arts Center, 6th and Atlantic Ave. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The Concert Ensemble and Strings program will perform. Senior band members will be recognized. Tickets sold at the door.

(May 7) The Ocean City Fine Arts League presents a free movie FINDING NEVERLAND, 6:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Library, 17th and Simpson Ave. This is a semi biographical film about J.M. Barrie and his relationship with the family that inspired him to write Peter Pan. The film was nominated for several Oscars including Best Actor for Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Barrie.

The LIBRARY will be featuring its free Saturday Afternoon movie “The Impossible” (PG13) on May 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Main Lecture Room N110. The movie focuses on the story of a tourist family caught in the destruction and chaotic aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. The Library also continues its free Spring Jazz Series on Sunday May 5 at 2 p.m. with the music of John Coltrane, Joe Henderson and Stan Getz, Lecture Room N110. The Library offers numerous programs including an Open Mic Night for area talent on Thursdays. Call (609) 399-2434 ext. 5238 for information.

(May 12) The 16th Annual MOTHER’S DAY Concert in Memory of Ocean City arts benefactor, Esther Weil, is set for 4 p.m., Sun., May 12 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.

History was made in Ocean City on March 13, 1975. It was a chilly winter’s day, kind of miserable really. But that didn’t stop Martin Z. Mollusk from creeping onto the 9th St. Beach and creating an Ocean City tradition.

Mayor B. Thomas Waldman and Commissioner Marilyn Moore were present to witness that Martin did, in fact, see his shadow despite considerable fog and thus summer would come one week early to this family resort. Following his successful outing, Martin conferred with the community leaders through his spiritual advisor and chef, Mark Soifer, the only person who can communicate with the crustacean.

He asked, actually he demanded, that the ceremony be moved to the first Thursday in May when the weather was more conducive to his sensitive, tropical upbringing. They readily agreed and a grand, albeit strange, perhaps even a trifle weird event was born, to be forever known as Martin Z. Mollusk Day.

Actually Martin has been quite successful in ensuring an early summer. Over the past 37 years, he has only failed to see his complete shadow once. In 1985, he saw a partial shadow and summer arrived 3 ½ days early.

Over the years, much pomp and circumstance has been added to this activity. The Ocean City High School Band gets a few hours off from class to play Pomp and Circumstance as Martin is escorted to the beach. This year his retinue will include Shelley the Mermaid, aka Suzanne Muldowney, the costumed Martin Mollusk and Dr. Frankenstein who will check Martin’s blood pressure to ensure he is healthy enough to make the creep.

Martin is now 102 years old in Hermit Crab years and resides in an assisted living condo at Old Salt on the Boardwalk. He is in good shape for his age, aggravated only by some mild arthritis in his right claw. Martin will also be accompanied by the City’s environmental character, Trash Buster who will inspect the beach area to make certain it is pristine for the creep .The World’s Only Wind Chimes Band will perform “Brother Can You Spare a Chime,” number one on the wind Chimes Charts. The fabulous Ocean City Fish will also participate.

Waiting for Martin on the Beach will be Big Mama Llama, yes a real Llama, from Bready Farms in Tuckahoe. If she shakes her head, that means Martin has seen his shadow.

Admission to the event is free and all spectators will be given a shelled replica of a hermit crab as a souvenir of the event. They will also be asked to sing “Some Enchanted Morning,” Martin’s theme song. This psyches him up for the arduous three foot creep to the Circle of Truth in the sand.

Martin’s creep is set for 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 2nd at the 9th Street Beach, adjacent to the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. If beach replenishment pumping is taking place that day at 9th St., the event will be moved to the next available Beach. Someone will be standing in front of the Music Pier to direct Martin enthusiasts to the location.
