July 4th Events, Sand Sculpting and More

Ocean City’s July 4th Events feature a 9:30 p.m. Musical Fireworks Display fired from a barge at sea off the Music Pier. The show will be a spectacular event visible from the Beach and Boardwalk. It will be preceded by events sponsored by Air Circus on the beach starting at the Music Pier.

These include a Kite Festival competition with registration at 6 p.m. Entry is free. Kite awards in various categories will be presented at 7:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., there will be a Yo Yo Demonstration and Contest followed by a Hula Hoop Competition at 8:30 p.m. Kite categories include Most Patriotic, Largest, Smallest, Highest Flying, Best Homemade, Best Stunt Flyer, Youngest Flyer and Oldest Flyer.

The popular band Tidal Wave will entertain in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, starting at 7: 30 p.m. until approximately 8:45 p.m. The Band will play again after the fireworks are over.

During the day, there will be two Bike Parades. The South Ocean City Assn’s Parade starts 10 a.m. at 40th and Central, with registration 9 a.m. at 40th and Asbury. The Gardens Civic Assn’s Bike Parade also starts at 10 a.m. with registration 9 a.m. at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot. Entry is free for both events.

Sing & Sign to celebrate USA on July 4th at 9:20 A.M. Come and show your pride in front of the Water Park on the Boardwalk. The flag will be raised to the Star Spangled Banner and students from OCHS and Upper Township will be performing 2 American favorite songs in sign language.

Ocean City’s first SAND SCULPTING Contest of the season will be held on JULY 9th at the 6th Street Beach starting 9 a.m. This popular contest began 42 years ago and is for amateur sculptors. There are 6 categories: 5 years and under, 6-8 years, 9-12 years, Teens, Single Adults and Families. Entry is free. Prizes are awarded. For more information, call (609) 525-9300.

BOAT AND HOME entries are now being taken for Night In Venice, JULY 26 starting 7:30 p.m. by the Longport Bridge. All boat owners who participate in the Parade will be given a $50 Decoration Card, a free photo of their boat sailing in the Parade and a commemorative mug. The Night In Venice Committee mourns the recent passing of Joan Hoffman of Ocean City. Joan was a vital member of the Committee for many years. She was an important factor in the event’s perennial success.

(Through July) Abstract Artist, DEREK KAPLAN, of the Reality Show “ Million Dollar Listing: New York” will exhibit at the Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave. Kaplan regularly appears on the Bravo Show with spouse and show star, Fedrik Eklund. (July 2) The Ocean City Pops goes ALL AMERICAN 8 p.m. at the Music Pier. Julliard pianist, Joseph Mohan, will entertain with an exciting and nostalgic Gershwin Medley plus his sensational American Tribute. (July 3) THE BRITISH INVASION Tribute, 7 p.m. at the Music Pier will be a benefit for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Ocean City. The program will include the Beatles and much more. There will be classic songs by British groups such as the Moody Blues, Dave Clark Five and Herman’s Hermits. An American response follows with memorable hits by the Monkees, the Turtles, The Mamas and the Papas, Tommy James and more. (July 7) Dr. Seuss’s THE CAT IN THE HAT. The Ocean City Theatre Company’s rendition of this classic is a lively, engaging play with sound effects performed by adults  for young children. Not a word has been changed from Dr. Seuss’s classic. You will be transported into the magical world of the famed poet. (July 7) ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA, 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier. This is a Tribute Act led by Dweezil Zappa, the eldest son of the late American composer and musician, Frank Zappa. The show highlights a collection of Frank Zappa’s rock oriented compositions. Many of the band members previously played with Frank Zappa. (July 11)  Ocean City NOR’EASTERS vs. Reading United AC (Retro Night). The first 50 fans will receive a retro Ocean City Barons scarf (ticket purchase necessary). Nor’easters all time leading scorer, Byron Carmichael, will be the first inductee into the team’s Hall of Fame. OCEAN CITY Historian, Fred Miller, will sign his new book, “Ocean City’s Historic Hotels,” at two venues in July. On July 10, Fred and Susan Miller will speak at the Ocean City Historical Museum’s 50th Anniversary Reception, 17th and Simpson Ave., 7 p.m. and sign books. On Sat., July 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. he and Susan will sign at Sun Rose Words and Music, 756 Asbury Ave.  The book tells the story of Ocean City’s glorious past with photos of former and current grand hotels. It also features never before published photos of famous Ocean City events. Those who can’t attend the Sun Rose signing can call (609) 399-9190 to reserve a signed book.

NOTICE: The Ocean City BOARDWALK TROLLEY will offer continuous service from July 1 to August 30. The Trolley runs in a continuous loop every 15 minutes from 5 p.m. to midnight. The Trolley runs from 59th and Central to 29th St. when it turns to Wesley Ave., then turns to Ocean at 15th St., and to Atlantic at 8th St., ends at Battersea and then loops back on the same route.
