OCTC Presents a Musical ‘Christmas Carol’

What’s Happening in Ocean City, NJ 12/6/17

The Ocean City Theatre Company will put a musical spin on a timeless story by Charles Dickens with six performances of “A Christmas Carol – The Broadway Musical” over the next two weeks.

The production will feature a professional cast of performers under the direction of Shannon Agnew with choreography by Colleen Kreisel and music direction by John Grieco. Broadway’s Alan Menken (Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” “Little Shop of Horrors”) and Lynn Ahrens (“Ragtime,” “Seussical,” “Once on This Island”) breathe new life into the classic tale with their adaptation.

The musical remains true to the story with three ghosts leading the selfish Ebenezer Scrooge through his past, present and future. Scrooge ultimately greets Christmas morning with a cheerful “Happy Christmas” before spending the day reconnecting and sharing love with those that mean the most to him.

Performances will be at the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace) at the following times:

  • December 8, 9, 15 and 16: 7:30 p.m.
  • December 10 and 16: 2 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for kids. Advance reservation is encouraged. Call 609-399-6111 or visit oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice.

A free concert at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 9) will feature the 60-voice Angelus Chorus directed by Richard Stanislaw.

Tenor John Taylor, a resident of Destin, Fla. and frequent soloist at the Ocean City Tabernacle, joins the choir to sing favorites including “O Holy Night,” “Silent Night,” “Bethlehem Morning” and “Every Valley” (Messiah). The Chorus presents John Rutter’s “Jesus Child,” along with Rutter’s arrangements of “Joy to the World” and “How Great Our Joy.” Beethoven’s “Hallelujah,” although less familiar than Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus,” carries the theme “in holy songs of joy.”

Sandra Miller’s Tapestry String Trio accompanies the choir and soloist, and provides Christmas arrangements of their own. Ruth Fritsch, choir director at Cape Island Baptist Church is accompanist for the Chorus. Tabernacle pianist Carolyn Lothian and organist Jeff Seals accompany Taylor and they provide a piano-organ duet.

Call 609-399-2988 for more information. St. Peter’s is at the intersection of Eighth Street and Central Avenue. The concert will include a free-will offering.
