Some Happy News from Ocean City’s Night in Venice!

We could all use some happy news, right? Well here’s some that may make you smile. This year’s Night In Venice Boat Parade will feature a new category: “The HAPPY DANCE CHALLENGE.”  We normally have a number of entertaining dance entries in the Parade. This Challenge should enliven the Parade even more by tying into the viral Happy Dance sensation. We thank the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce for generating the idea.

The Best Three entries will be awarded a collector’s item loving cup with a happy face engraved on it.  There will be safety precautions emphasized for dance entrants that will be reviewed at the mandatory Night In Venice boat captain’s meeting.

The Night In Venice Boat Parade will be held on Sat., July 26 starting 7:30 p.m. by the Longport Bridge. All boat owners who participate in the Parade will be given a $50 decoration card, a free photo of their boat in the Parade and a commemorative mug featuring this year’s suggested theme, “Night at the Oscars.” There will also be prizes for best decorated Bay Front Homes.

Boat categories will include Most Original, Best Decorated, Musical, Comic, Classic (25 years or older with historic value) and Children’s Division completely decorated by children 15 and under.) All boat captains are required to attend a meeting to be briefed on safety requirements including the necessity for life preserver jackets.

(June 25) The Farmers & Crafters Market will have its opening day on Wednesday, June 25th. Farmers will be on the grounds of the Ocean City Tabernacle, 6th Street and Asbury Avenue and Crafters on Asbury Avenue between 5th & 6th Streets. The market will be open from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and will showcase a dozen farmers and a number of crafters with many handmade treasures and treats. Our Farmers and Crafters Market will feature a great assortment of fresh Jersey produce, fresh flowers, and fresh herbs; all from local farms.The Market will continue every Wednesday through September 10th. This market, established with the NJ Department of Agriculture, is designed to benefit our local farmers by exposing them to a new outlet to sell their produce, which will help sustain their farms. For more information, please call 609-399-1412 or visit us on the web at www.oceancityvacation.com.

MOVIE, TV AND STAGE LEGEND to perform in Ocean City: PEGGY KING, who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is still performing in night clubs today, will appear in concert at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson, on Fri., June 27 at 7 p.m. in the Main Auditorium. The event is free and seating is on a first come, first served basis. Peggy has performed with dozens of legends including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Mel Torme and Andre Previn. (June 25) BROADWAY on the BOARDWALK: Featuring Broadway star of Wicked, Julia Murney, presented by the Ocean City Theatre Co. Broadway comes to life in this all new production that celebrates Broadway and the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company’s 7th Anniversary. (June 28) OC Sailing Foundation OPEN HOUSE-FREE sailboat rides will be given to all attendees! The Ocean City Sailing Foundation (www.ocsailingfoundation.org) located at the Bayside Center, 520 Bay Ave., will celebrate starting its 7th year of operations with an Open House on Saturday, June 28, from 9a.m. to 12:00p.m.  In addition to the free sailboat rides, all of the OCSF sailboats will be on display and the instructors will answer questions about the sport of sailing and available classes at the Bayside Center.  The OCSF’s mission is “to promote sailing to Youth and Families in the Greater Ocean City  Area by providing safe, affordable sailing instruction and sailing opportunities.”  We have had approximately 200 sailing campers each season.  Please come and join us for a wonderful Saturday morning sailing experience!

(Through July) Abstract Artist, DEREK KAPLAN, of the Reality Show “Million Dollar Listing: New York” will exhibit at the Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave. Kaplan regularly appears on the Bravo show with spouse and show star, Fredrik Eklund. There will be a “Meet the Artist”  Reception on Wed., July 2nd, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A native of Zimbabwe, Africa, Kaplan’s non-traditional paintings combine the peace and harmony of nature with everyday life. (July 2) Opening on Wednesday, 7/2 at 10:30am – David and the Giant: A new musical. Julliard pianist, Joseph Mohan, will entertain with an exciting and nostalgic Gershwin Medley plus his sensational American Tribute. (July 3) The BRITISH INVASION Tribute, 7 p.m., a One Night Only Performance at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. This is a benefit for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6650, Ocean City. The program will include more than just the Beatles. You will hear classic songs by iconic British groups such as the Zombies, the Moody Blues, Dave Clark Five and Herman’s Hermits. An American “response’ follows with memorable hits by the Monkees, The Turtles, The Mamas and the Papas, Tommy James and the Shondells and more. (July 4th) Holiday Events feature a 9:30 p.m. musical fireworks display fired from a barge at sea off the Music Pier. There will be two bike parades during the day: The South Ocean City Ocean City Assn’s colorful event starts 10 a.m. at 40th and Asbury Ave., registration 9 a.m.  The Gardens Civic Assn’s Parade starts 10 a.m., with registration 9 a.m. at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot. The Annual Air Circus Kite Flying Contest is set for 6 p.m. at the 9th Beach, entry is free. Air Circus will also present a Yo Yo Demonstration and Contest at 8 p.m. and a Hula Hoop Contest at 8:30 p.m.

(July 4) OH WHAT A NIGHT! Tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Opening 7/4 at 8pm. Followed by performances every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night at 8pm all through August 30th. Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, and many more…come enjoy the hits of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in this exciting musical review that delivers high-energy choreography, endless hits, and informative and often hilarious banter between the stellar-cast of those boys from Jersey. EXCITING NEWS! Meet Phillies Legend DARREN DAULTON on June 28th from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Music Pier Loggia, Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk. He will be signing autographs for “Kisses For Kyle,” with all proceeds benefitting families battling childhood cancer. It will be $20 per autograph to support this vital cause.
