Weird Week, Pamper Scamper, Baby Parade Coming Soon

Weird Contest Week, the Pamper Scamper and Baby Parade are coming soon. But first a REMINDER that a SAND Sculpting Contest will be held at the 6th Street Beach starting 9 a.m. on (Aug. 6) and the MISS Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant and Hermit Crab Races are set for 1 p.m. on (Aug. 6) at the 6th St. Beach. Crab Beauties and Crabathlete racers may register starting noon at the 6th St. Beach. Entry is free to all contests, prizes are awarded. In the event of rain, events will be held inside the Sports and Civic Center, 6th and Boardwalk.

Also our annual TWINS CONTEST is set for (Aug.7) inside the Music Pier with registration beginning at 6 p.m., contest starts 6:30 p.m. Contest is for twins of all ages who look most and least alike. Entry is free. Ribbons are awarded.

WEIRD CONTEST WEEK in Ocean City is set for Aug. 11th to 15th. The event billed as “Wacky but Not Tacky” features one unusual contest each day in the Music Pier Loggia (porch), Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace starting at 11a.m. Entry in all contests is free.

Contests include Saltwater Taffy Sculpting on Monday sponsored by Shriver’s on the Boardwalk, French Fry Sculpting on Tuesday sponsored by the Promenade, That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles on Wednesday, chew or thumb a huge cookie into a work of art. The day also features “Ears Looking at You,” a contest for competitive ear wigglers.

Note: The sculpting contest are divided into age groups, 5 and under, 6-8, 9-12, teens and adults. Prizes are awarded. For information, call (609) 525-9300. Advisory: Taffy, French Fries and Cookies may contain peanuts and other allergens.

On Thursday Beadamania teaches Weird Weekers how to make necklaces or bracelets with beads provided by the Potomac Bead Company. Their reward is participants take their bead treasures home. On Friday there are two contests: Little Miss and Little Mister Chaos. Children 3-5 make as much noise as they can by banging on pots and pans for three minutes. Mister and Miss Miscellaneous is for folks who have always wanted to be in a talent contest but were deterred by conditions beyond their control.

The PAMPER SCAMPER: This cute and sometimes exciting Baby Crawling Race for ages up to 15 months is set for August 12th at the 6th Street Beach. Registration is at 9 a.m., with race beginning at 9:30 a.m. for more information, call (609) 525-9300. Note: Babies who stand up and walk are applauded then disqualified.

Ocean City’s 105th Annual BABY PARADE is set for Thurs., August 14th starting 5 p.m. Parade route is 6th to 12th Street on the Boardwalk. It is the oldest continuously run event of its kind in the country. Past grand marshals include baseball immortal Joe DiMaggio. Princess Grace Kelly also appeared in the parade and was known to enjoy the event.

The Parade is open to children from infants to 10 years of age. Contestants can register at the Music Pier Information Center at Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Information hours are Sunday through Thurs. 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to11p.m.

(Aug. 7) the Lucky Guess Game Show with Ron Mac Closkey is one of the many free and entertaining events offered by the Ocean City Free Public Library. A cross between Jeopardy and Who Wants to be a Millionaire, players have to answer multiple choice questions in six categories. It’s fun and has been a big hit in our First Night celebration. The show is set for 7 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room. Call (609) 399-2434 for a weekly newsletter featuring all of the Library’s free events.

(Aug. 7) Unlimited Ride Wristbands benefit Operation First Response from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Playland’s Castaway Cove, 10th and Boardwalk. Purchase a $15 wristband the day of the event. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Operation First Response assists our wounded military heroes and their families.

(Aug. 8-9-10) is the Ocean City Beach Patrol’s Reunion Weekend, reports Ocean City Historian and former lifeguard, Fred Miller. August 8, the 75th Annual South Jersey Lifeguard Championships are set for the 34th St. Beach in Ocean City starting 6:30 p.m. A reunion is scheduled for August 9 and the annual Alumni Competition will be held on the Seaview Harbor Beach from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 10th. (Aug. 9) 39th Annual Boys and Girls SURF FISHING Tournament: 9 a.m.-Noon at the north end beach adjacent to the Ocean City-Longport Bridge. Registration 9 a.m.-10 a.m. at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot. Fishing 10 a.m.-noon. Parental supervision required. Must bring your own bait. Awards presented to various age groups 8-16 years. (Aug. 12, 13, 14) Joseph and the AMAZING Technicolor Dreamcoat presented by the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company. The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many Colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Broadway truly comes to life as professional singers and dancers present this acclaimed Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
