Ocean City Sandy Sculpting Winners

Over 100 entrants competed for honors in Ocean City’s 38th Annual Sand Sculpting contest held on the 6th St. Beach recently (Aug. 5).

In the Family Division there was a tie for first place. The Fadem family of Devon, Pa. sculpted a huge birthday cake to celebrate13 consecutive years of participation in the event. The family wore special T shirts marking the historic occasion and surrounded the entry with a color photo display of their past triumphs.

Seventh Street Surf Shop also won a first place plaque for their artistic rendering of a musician playing the bongo drums. The huge sculpture was one of the spectators’ favorites.

The Henely Family of Hammonton sculpted a shark and the Green family of Philadelphia a sea monster for the second and third awards.

Honorable Mentions were won by the Shaun Profy Family of Croydon, Pa. for a huge head, the Hunsinger family of Harleysville, Pa. for Apples in a Basket, the Metalios family of Connecticut for a castle, the Browne family of Vineland for Mouse and Cheese and the Soltys of Cherry Hill for a school of dolphins.

In the Single Adult Category Bruce Welch of Smithville won first place with Speedo Man, Steve Ludwig of York, Pa. copped second place for Hold the Relish and Courtney May of Marmora was third with a hermit crab. Honorable Mentions went to Roens of Sanatoga, Pa. for a butterfly and Joan Vicari of Egg Harbor Township for Flip Flops.

In the Teen Division Phil Repisky and Tom Kook of Corbin City won first for their Lions, Rebecca Wolf and Allysa Mangano of Newton, Pa. were second with a castle and Whitney and Hanna Craig of Lutwen Ohio were third with Dolphins Jumping. Honorable Mentions went to Laura Fulton of Bargaintown who sculpted a sailboat and the Castagna teens of Philadelphia for their castle.

In the 9-12 Division Leah and Ashley Balderson of Doylestown, Pa. were first with a Hermit Crab, Dylan Lauviaus of Mohnton, Pa. was second with a Phillies P and Julianne Mangano, Jessy Dickson and Hannah Welier of Newtown, Pa. were third with a picnic setting. Honorable Mentions went to Emily Cairncross and Ella and Paul Reifsynder of France and Pennsylvania for their castles.

In the 6-8 Year Division Zoe McMahan of Broomal, Pa and Maggie Green of Randolph, N.J. were first with a Snake, the Pier Group of Virginia, Philadelphia and New Jersey were second with a boat and Jenna and Joseph Destro of Mahwah were third with a fish.

Five and Under winners included Katy and Ricky Wetzell of Columbus, Ohio first with a crab and a mermaid, Lindsey and Eric Demyun of West Chester, Pa. second with a birthday cake and Mary Kate and Eve Fischer of Maple Glen, Pa. third with a turtle.

The Upper Township K.E.Y.E.S day camp regularly sends a contingent to compete separately in Ocean City sand sculpting contests. Their winners included Katie McLaughlin first with Shark Week, Colin Stewart, Josh Breslin and Andrew May second with a NX Tribute and John, Ryan, Jerden, Lewis and Markus third with Mid-Evil Township. Honorable mentions went to Brooke and Natalie for a cake and Elizabeth, Caitlin, Olivia and Aili for Hawaii.
