Sindia Day and Open House and PTA Fundraiser

Sindia Day, the celebration of Ocean City’s 1901 shipwreck, is set for Sat., Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. at the Ocean City Historical Museum, 17th and Simpson Ave.

The four masted clipper ship was returning from Kobe Japan when it beached during a storm off the 15th Street Beach. It eventually sank into the sands and has remained buried for 108 years.

Several attempts to unearth what’s left of its cargo have proved futile. Legend is that there is a gold idol taken from a Japanese shrine at the bottom of the hold. The idol was reported to be upset about being removed from its shrine and thus caused the storm and beaching. Others attribute the wreck to the inebriation of the crew.

There will be a slide show with photos of the ship before it sank into the sands. Historians Fred Miller and Paul Anselm will discuss the lore surrounding the event. Visitors will receive a tour of the Museum. Refreshments will be served. #########
