Are you Ready to Sculpt Fries and Crumble Cookies?

Taffy Sculpting! French Fry Sculpting! Cookie Crumbling? and more are all features of Ocean City’s July Jubilee, June 24th to 28th, at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.  The event includes fun contests for all ages leading into the gala 4th of July weekend.

July Jubilee was started over 20 years ago when Elsie Gillespie, then president of the Chamber of Commerce, wanted to treat vacationers arriving early for the 4th of July to an interesting time. When she called me, I suggested that we repeat contests from our popular Weird Week held in August.

And so it came to pass, that the last week in June was designated July Jubilee by Elsie. One contest is held daily, 11 a.m. in the Pavilion of the Music Pier. Entry is free. The age divisions include five and under, 6-8, 9-12 teens and adults. Ribbons are awarded to the winners, everyone receives a free ticket to one ride at Wonderland and a participation ribbon.

The contest line up includes Taffy Sculpting on Mon. courtesy of Shriver’s; French Fry Sculpting on Tues., thanks to the Promenade and That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles on Wed., with an humongous 12 inch diameter cookie from Ward’s Pastry to chew into a work of art. Wednesday also includes a Super Hero dress up contest featuring Suzanne Muldowney as Super Girl. This is Superman’s 70th anniversary which makes the contest especially relevant.

Thursday is Clip Art Day with participants devising clever entries like the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge and airplanes from paper clips. Friday is Extreme Hermit Crab Wrestling, extremely non violent. Hermit Crabs are placed on their shells and the first one to turn over on its claws is declared the winner. Contestants must bring their own crabs. For information, call (609) 525-9300.

Fourth of July programs include a musical Fireworks Display fired from a barge at sea off the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace at 9:30 p.m. This will be preceded by a Kite Flying Contest, 7 p.m. at the Moorlyn Terrace Beach sponsored by Air Circus. Entry is free.

There will be two Fourth of July Decorated Bike Parades: The South Ocean City Improvement Assn. has one set for 10 a.m. with registration at 9 a.m., 40th Street and Asbury Ave. The Garden Civic Assn. has parade at 10 a.m. with registration 9a.m. forming at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot.
