Quiet Festival This Week, Vet's Day Nov. 12, Bridge Race Reset for Nov. 17th

Ocean City’s Annual QUIET FESTIVAL is set for this week starting Wed., Nov. 7th. The Festival kicks off with the Annual Yawn Along Ceremony on City Hall Lawn at noon. The program starts with a performance by the Ocean City Sign Club signing to quiet music. The World’s only Wind Chimes Band and the Yawn Along singers will yawn to the tune of Beautiful Dreamer. And there will be Maple Pod, Pine Cone and Pin Dropping.

There will be bubbles, paper airplanes and a Yo Yo demonstration by Doug Jewel l of Air Circus. The program will be dedicated to down town merchants who suffered considerable damage to their stores during the recent storm. They are all working hard to reopen. Please remember to support our merchants and restaurants during the upcoming holidays and year around. They are an important part of the Ocean City Family. (This event will be held if storm does not bring rain to area).

Due to problems with the storm, the paper airplane sessions of the Quiet Festival set for the Tabernacle Nov. 7 at 4 p.m and the Library on Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. have been cancelled. There will be a paper airplane making and flying session on Sat., Nov. 10th at the Community Center, 17th and Simpson Ave., at 10:30 a.m. during the Quiet Pet Contest, Snore at the Shore, Turtle Singers appearance and Trick or Treat event.The problems have nothing to do with the facilities. Some of the members of the paper airplane group need more time to cope with storm clean up.


Also on Friday, there will be an open poetry reading and discussion 7 p.m. at Library, Room 110. Come to read, talk, listen or take a nap. Speaking of nap, the Quiet Festival is one of the few programs presented by NAP, the National Assn. of Tired People.   NAP members normally shun physical and mental activities in favor of, you guessed it, napping.

Saturday Nov. 10th is a big day for the Quiet Festival. The White Mice, Hamster and Guinea Pig Challenge, a quiet pet contest (occasional squeaking excluded) will be held starting 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Community Center Senior Room. Pets will be judged for their lack of energy, unusual sleeping positions and general disinterest in their surroundings. There will be a Guinea Pig Lettuce Eating Contest and a category for costumes.

HALT Rescue’s Danielle Clark will provide information on how to care for and protect these cute little critters. Certificates will be given to all entrants. New this year will be exciting SNORE AT THE SHORE competition. Participants will have the option of sitting on a chair or lying on the sofa and be given a reasonable amount of time to create a quiet snore. All of this plus Jerry Lukas will draw free cartoons of your pets, the Turtle Singers will bring their giant tortoise, Big Bart and tell stories, plus take a photo with Martin Z. Mollusk, Ocean City’s famous Hermit Crab, plus Yo Yo demonstrations and numerous other surprises.

On Sunday, you’re on your own, take a reflective walk, inspect the horizon, fly a kite, give your dog a tummy rub, enjoy the moon and stars.

THE TRAIL OF TWO CITIES 5K Run/Walk has been rescheduled for Sat., Nov. 17 starting 8 a.m. at the Ocean City Transportation Center, 9th and Haven Ave. Registrations are again being taken. Call (609)525-9300 or (609) 927-2053 ext. 3101.

Two Trick or Treats are set for Ocean City on Saturday, Nov. 10th. Trick or Treat throughout the City will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Trick or Treating will kick-off  on Saturday at the Quiet Festival program starting 10:30 a.m. in the Senior Room of the Community Center, 17th and Simpson Ave. Youngsters will be given treats courtesey of NAP, the National Assn. of Tired People, sponsors of the Festival. They can then enjoy the events NAP has scheduled in the Senior Room including The Quiet Pet Contest featuring white mice, hamsters and other quiet critters, The Snore at the Shore, a quiet snoring contest, The Turtle Singers with their super pet Tortoise, Big Bart, a Yo Yo Demonstration by Air Circus, and lots of other quiet surprises. The postponed crowning of the Dog of the Year will be held on Sunday, Nov. 11 starting 11:30 a.m. at the Port O' Call, 15th and Boardwalk. There will be a Silent Auction, 2013 calendars and T shirts will be available with photos of the contestants and the winner will be crowned in cerimonious fashion. The event is open to the public. Bring your "best friend along. The event is free and sponsored by the Ocean City Dog Park, a friendly place for doggies to meet and greet.

(Nov. 12) Our annual VETERANS DAY PROGRAM will be held on Mon., Nov. 12 at Veterans Memorial Park, 5th and Wesley Ave. starting 11 a.m. It is sponsored by the American Legion and VFW of Ocean City and the City. In the event of rain the program will be held in the Tabernacle Auditorium across the street from the Memorial Park.

(Nov. 17) A Tribute to Elvis performer TED PRIOR will be held in the Green Room of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace at 1 p.m. Please enter at the Music Pier front door on the Boardwalk. Prior performed in Ocean City for over 15 years, often donating his time to the City’s special events including the Humane Society’s Barks on the Boards. There will be tributes to Prior, his music will be played and his friends and fans will have an opportunity to comment. A star will be placed near his favorite dressing room door in the Green Room.

(Nov. 17) EARLIER THAN THE BIRD, a downtown shopping extravaganza 7 a.m. till noon. Get out early and jump start your holiday shopping the weekend before Thanksgiving. Shop in your pajamas. There will be free coffee, giveaways and early bird specials. Also free turkey prizes for best PJ’s. Noon to 3 p.m., free horse and carriage rides, face painting and photos with Santa. (Through November) The Annual JURIED ART SHOW is being held at the Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave., through this month. An awards ceremony will be held Friday, Nov. 9 from 7-to 8:30 p.m. The public is invited. The Arts Center is also holding its annual FALL CRAFT SHOW on Sat., Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Art, doll furniture, jewelry, note cards and many other gifts will be for sale.

The Ocean City Fine Arts League,” Art on Asbury,” 608 Asbury Ave., will present a FREE SHOWING of “America’s Heart and Soul,” a film that captures the people who make this country beautiful. The showing is set for 6:30 p.m., Tues., Nov. 13 at the Ocean City Library, 17th and Simpson Ave. The League also has a monthly exhibit at its Asbury Ave. Gallery, call (609) 814-0308.

The Miss New Jersey OUTSTANDING TEEN Pageant is an affiliate of the Miss New Jersey Pageant held at the Music Pier in June. The winner goes on to compete in Orlando, Florida in August for the title of America’s Outstanding Teen.

The next free classic film to be shown at the Ocean City Library, 17th and Simpson Ave, will be IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, Dec. 10 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Library’s Lecture Hall.
