Unusual Events Plentiful in Ocean City This Week

August 7th: Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant followed by the King of Klutz Crab races. Event starts 1 p.m. in the volley ball section of the 6th St. Beach. Glamorous Crabettes, many on colorful displays, vie for the Coveted Cucumber Rind Cup, symbol of Crustacean comeliness. Past winners include such legends as Crabunzel, Crabopatra, Copacrabana and Pirates of the Crabibbean. Winner creeps down a flower bedecked runway while all sing “Here It Comes, Miss Crustacean.”

 

The Pageant is followed by the rollicking, King of Klutz Races with about 150 crabathletes creeping and clunking over an 8 ft. plywood oval. The winner is declared the King of Klutz and receives a plaque that says so. Entry is free in both contests.

A Sand Sculpting Contest precedes Miss Crustacean starting 9 a.m. on the 6th St. Beach. Entry is free, categories include 5 and under, 6-8, 9-12, Teens, Individual Adults and Families. Call (609) 525-9300 for information.

August 8th:  The City’s 104TH Annual Baby Parade, the longest consecutively run Baby Parade in the Country, begins 5 p.m. at 6th and Boardwalk and concludes at 12th and Boardwalk. Register at Music Pier Information Center, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.

(Aug. 7) Ocean City Pops Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch, 8 p.m. at Music Pier with Julliard pianists Joseph Mohan and vocalist Jody Kidwell. As a composer, Hamlisch won virtually every award that exists, numerous Oscars, Grammys, Emmys and Golden Globes. He wrote music for Broadway hits and for over 40 movies including “The Sting” and “The Way We Were.” Tickets are $15/$10 at Music Pier Box Office (609) 525-9248 in memory of Doris Coates Ollis.

(Aug. 9-10) “Big Bad”: The notorious Big Bad Wolf is being slapped with a law suit by countless characters he has wronged. Show features talents of youth performers from the Ocean City Theatre Co. Theatre Camp. Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 10 at 10:30 a.m., at the Moorlyn Family Theatre, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. All tickets are $10. (Aug. 10) 38th Annual Boys and Girls Surf Fishing Tournament 9 a.m. till noon at the north end beach adjacent to the Ocean City/ Longport Bridge. Registration is 9 a.m.-10 a.m. at the Longport Bridge Parking Lot. Fishing from 10 a.m. till noon. Parental supervision required. Age groups 8-10, 11-13, 14-16. Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. (Aug. 10) 9th Annual Walkathon for Father John Kennedy’s Happy Home Orphanage- Registration 9:30 a.m. in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Walk begins at 11 a.m.

(Aug. 12) Rusted Root, 7:30 p.m. at Music Pier. Band is noted for its fusion of acoustic rock, world and other styles of music. Draws from African, Latin American and Native American influences. (Aug. 14-16) Peter Pan presented by the Greater  Ocean City Theatre Co. and Ocean City Pops. COMING SOON! Get ready to pitch CLAM SHELLS. The First Martin Z. Mollusk Clam Drain Federation World Championships are set for August 24th between 5th and 6th Streets with sign ups noon to 2 p.m. and games starting at 3 p.m. Clam Drain shells level the playing field providing a standard, comfortable shell for all contestants.
