What's Happening in Ocean City 12/7/11

Ocean City will present an array of holiday events right through to First Night on New Year’s Eve. Here is a listing:

(Dec. 9) A CHRISTMAS BIRTHDAY is set for 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Flanders Hotel, 11th and Boardwalk. It will feature Blues sensation, Terri Showers. A buffet dinner and desserts are included. Seating is limited. Tickets are $49. Contact Peaches Lukens, (609) 398-8781.

(Dec. 10) SANTA PAWS:  Bring your pet to the Ocean City Humane Society, Shelter Rd. off Bay and Tennessee Ave., for a photo with Santa. Hours, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 per photo with proceeds benefiting the outstanding rescue efforts of our award winning shelter. Call (609) 399-2018.

(Dec. 10) SINDIA DAY at the Ocean City Historical Museum, 17th and Simpson Ave., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. See authentic photos and learn the history of Ocean City’s historic shipwreck. There will be craft activities for children. Also see Heritage in Quilts exhibit through Dec.30. The Museum’s 2011-2012 Historical Calendar is on sale for $8.50. Calendars can be shipped for holidays at an additional charge.

(Dec.10)  Ocean City’s weather predicting Hermit Crab, MARTIN Z. MOLLUSK appears on ANIMAL PLANET, during a one hour feature devoted to pets. Martin will share the spotlight with an Ant, Box Turtle and Salamander during the second segment of an 8 p.m. telecast. How to Care for Hermit Crabs will be emphasized during the episode. Martin’s biography, Rhyme and Punishment, was recently reprinted by popular demand. A few copies are available at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave., (609-525-9300) for $5 with all proceeds donated to the Ocean City Food Cupboard.

(Dec.10) The Cape May County Chapter of Amnesty International will commemorate HUMAN RIGHTS DAY at 7 p.m. in the Ocean City Library’s Lecture Hall, 17th and Simpson Ave. The program will feature renowned performance poet, Ketan Ben Ceasar. He will be introduced by poet Bill Sherman, an internationally renowned poet who read in London with Allen Ginsburg and Paul McCartney.

Human Rights Day is celebrated internationally thanks to the efforts of Eleanor Roosevelt 63 years ago. Amnesty International consists of ordinary people who fight injustice and promote human rights, notes Georgina Shanley, organizer of the Ocean City program.

(Dec. 16-18)  CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND, the popular Holiday Spectacular, produced by Michael Hartman of the Ocean City Theatre Company, will present a dazzling array of professional performers in a holiday extravaganza. This show is all new and comparable to those featured on Broadway except for the down home ticket prices that range from $12 to $15. Call 609-525-9300.

Dec. 7) 3 to 4 p.m. Young adults are invited to make Holiday Ornaments and gift tags in the Senior Center Kitchen, call (609)399-2434 ext. 5235. (Thurs., Dec. 8) from 11a.m. till noon in the Main Lecture Room there will be a TED Talk program with British MP Rory Stewart featured on video about Afghanistan after 9/11. Now a decade later he asks: Why are Western and coalition forces still fighting there? A general discussion follows the 20 minute video. (Thurs., Dec. 8) New York Times Best Selling author, Richard Paul Evans, will talk about the power of books to change individuals and countries, 7 to 9 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room, N110. (Sun., Dec. 11) The Holiday Festival, 2 to 4:30 p.m. It features Sam Sardina performing hits and holiday songs in the  Library’s Atrium 2 p.m. Meet Santa in the Small Meeting Room (N116)  from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be a performance by the Somers Point Jazz Society from 2-4 p.m. in the Main Lecture Room, N110 plus face painters, stiltwalkers, tattoo artists. puppeteers and more with refreshments by Yianni’s Café. (On Going) Every Fri. through Dec. 23 is HOSPITALITY NIGHT in the Downtown from 5 to 8 p.m. with free horse and carriage rides, Evening Shopping Specials, Carolers, Santa and more. FREE Horse and Carriage Rides are available from noon to 3 p.m. every Sat. and Sun., ending Dec. 17-18. There will be photos with SANTA IN A LIFEBOAT for a fee at the Music Pier every Sat. and Sun., ending Dec. 17-18 from noon till 3 p.m.

(Dec. 31) FIRST NIGHT: Ocean City’s gala New Year’s Eve Celebration offers 70 entertainment programs at central locations from 4 p.m. until midnight capped by fireworks. THE OCEAN CITY ARTS CENTER, 17th and Simpson Ave., is featuring a show of artwork from area school students through Dec.17. There will be meet  the artists reception Dec. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free. Call (609) 399-7628.

THE OCEAN CITY FINE ARTS LEAGUE, 608 Asbury Ave., is presenting a Petite Show in December, a fascinating display of miniature paintings by area artists. There will be a reception Dec. 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Call (609) 814-0308.

A Night of Gothic Stories is set for Dec. 9 and Dec.10 from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Included are The Yellow Wallpaper, a story about a woman suffering from depression; Monkey’s Paw a tale that deals with the inevitability of fate and the dangers of wishing for a change and The Brazilian Cat, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, about a young Englishman, heir to a great fortune, who is in great debt.
