PHILIPPINE TRIBUTE & CRAFT SHOW THIS WEEK, NIGHT IN VENICE JULY 28

The City’s Third Annual TRIBUTE TO THE PHILIPPINES is set for this weekend plus the popular regional craft show sponsored by the Jersey Shore Artisans Guild.

Then next weekend, July 28, Ocean City presents its 58^th Annual Night in Venice Boat Parade and Bay Front Home Celebration. This event is preceded by the Merchants of Venice Seafood Festival, July 27 in the downtown.

The Philippines Tribute consists of three programs:

A two day craft and cultural festival will be held in the Pavilion of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. This event is sponsored by Western Union. It consists of craft exhibits, tourism displays, free blood pressure and sugar readings by Filipino nurses and exhibits of assorted packaged foods. There will be displays by the Filipino National Bank, Philippine Department of Tourism, The Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce and the City. There will be lots of giveaways including free tickets to rides at Wonderland. Air Circus of Ocean City will entertain with lively Yo Yo Demonstrations. Admission is free.

From 5 to 7 p.m., entertainment is scheduled in the Music Pier Auditorium featuring the Sounds of Manila Band, singers Archie D’ and Kay Habana, the MB2NY Young performers and Gabe Basalatan, Gail Banawis, Nina Mojares and Aviela Reyes. On Sun., July 22 physicians and nurses from the Adventist University of the Philippines will offer a free Health Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ocean City Library, 17^th and Simpson Ave. The program will offer sessions on How to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes, Beat Cancer, Lower Blood Pressure, Combat Depression, Heart Disease and on nutrition and various other Health Therapies. There will be free Vegetarian Hors d’oeuvres served during the day. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., there will be Philippine folk songs and news clips on the “Blue Zone,” the area in the Philippines where people live the longest than any in the world thanks to healthy life styles. The huge Ocean City FINE ART and HANDCRAFT Festival will be presented by the Jersey Shore Artisans Guild on Sat., July 21 in the Civic Center and Carey Stadium just off the Boardwalk at 6^th St. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Browse through imaginative creations from furniture and fine art, jewelry to jigsaws, wind chimes to waterfalls, fancy candy to Raggedy Andy and gourmet treats galore.

Guild Director, JoAnne Schaut explains, “Since we began in 2002 our July, November and March Fairs, have raised over $170,000 for area charities including the Ocean City Food Cupboard, the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Beginning with this Festival, Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, a support community of people living with cancer, their families and friends, will share in the funds raised from the rental of 65 booths, 14 rows of outdoor tents and all of the $3 admission donations.

“These are the only fine art and handcraft shows that require all booths display a sign stating that everything has been handcrafted by the artisan selling it,”Schaut notes. “Many exhibitors travel a long way to present their exclusive creations in Ocean City.”

Parking is available at the 5^th   St. Parking Lot, one block from the festival.

ENTER NIGHT IN VENICE NOW! Night in Venice is set for Saturday, July 28 starting at 6 p.m. This is a new, earlier starting time. The Parade begins at the Longport Bridge and ends at Bay and Tennessee Ave.

All boaters who enter receive a $50 gas card, will have a photo of their boat taken during the Parade and receive a commemorative mug. There will also be cash prizes.

Best homeowner entries will receive prizes and a mug.

The mug will be extra special this year. In addition to commemorating Night in Venice, it will mark the completion of the Causeway and new bridge construction. The front side will feature the old bridge and the back will illustrate the new super span. This will be the City’s official souvenir of the bridge construction. OPERATION FIRST RESPONSE is an organization that serves wounded heroes and their families. The FMBA of the Ocean City Fire Department is holding a $5 Sticker Fund Raiser to support these veterans. The City’s Annual BOARDWALK ART SHOW will be held Fri.-Sun., Aug. 3-5. Hours are set from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fri. and Sat. and 10 .m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Ocean City Fine Arts League is hosting a PLEIN AIR ART event every Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. along Asbury Ave. to Aug. 8. Plein Air is a French Expression for painting outdoors in open air.
