WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OCEAN CITY THIS WEEKEND

OVER 7,000 BIKERS will roll into Ocean City for the annual MS Bike-a-thon on Sat., Oct. 3. The event raises over $4 million for the Delaware Valley MS Society which services those afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis and searches for a cure. Bikers begin arriving at the Sports and Civic Center, 6th St. off Boardwalk, before noon and will spend the day in Ocean City leaving Sunday morning for the return trip to the Philadelphia area.

The event was started by Philadelphia TV anchor and author, Larry Kane. The initial bike tour had 30 riders, Larry and a group of his friends.

The event is now one of the largest of its kind in the country. Larry’s mother was MS afflicted and after she died he established the ride to serve others in her memory.

The City’s Annual CITY WIDE YARD SALE will be held on Sat. Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. till noon at the Tabernacle Grounds and throughout the City. Table sales will be featured on the Tabernacle grounds and a map showing locations throughout the City where home sales will be held is available at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave. and at the Chamber of Commerce building on 9th St. across from TD Bank. The fInal FARMERS’ MARKET of the season will be held on Oct. 3 at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave., from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m.

Downtown and Boardwalk merchants will hold table sales Oct.3-4.

A celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the classic UNDERDOG cartoon is set for 1 p.m. Sat., Oct. 3 at the Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave. Admission is free.

The event will honor SUZANNE MULDOWNEY who for years has resurrected the character in Ocean City Parades and on national television. The afternoon will feature the showing of Underdog cartoons and a documentary film on Muldowney. The award winning documentary was produced by film maker, Boris Gavrilovic, who spent four years tracing Muldowney’s exploits throughout the country. It is a sympathetic portrayal that explains her fascination for the character.

There will be an Underdog Look-Alike Contest and the audience is encouraged to bring Underdog memorabilia. Suzanne will conclude the program with an interpretive dance portraying Underdog. Visitors may join in singing Happy Birthday to Underdog and then enjoy a slice of birthday cake. For information, call 609-525-9300.

The CYSTIC FIBROSIS Golf Tournament is set for Mon., Oct. 5th at Greate Bay Country Club is Somers Point. The event benefits children with Cystic Fibrosis. Call 609-399-7890.

NOTICE: The annual boardwalk new car show scheduled for Oct. 3-4 has been cancelled due to a lack of cars to show. Seems local dealers inventory was wiped out by the national Cash for Clunkers promotion.
