Martin Z. Mollusk Gets a New Costume for First Night

For 35 years, our pesky hermit crab Mascot, Martin Z. Mollusk, has loyally served Ocean City. On the first Thursday in May, he ventures on to the Moorlyn Terrace Beach and attempts to see his shadow. If he does, summer arrives one week early at this family community and resort. A one week extension of the season is nothing to sneeze at in these competitive times. It’s a nice bonus for residents, vacationers, the kids and of course the business folk. No one can say Martin hasn’t come through for Ocean City. During his 35 year tenure he has seen his shadow 34 times. Once he saw a partial shadow and summer arrived 3 ½ days early. It has been an astounding record. For this reason the First Night Committee, the Chamber... Read More

Community Groups, Volunteers Key to Success of Events

A note from PEACHES LUKENS reminded me of what I have known for years but perhaps something you may not have considered. And that’s how Ocean City’s many community groups and volunteers make our numerous events a success and add to our quality of life… Every Christmas day for decades Peaches and her volunteers have provided a FREE HOME COOKED buffet for the community. This party includes everyone, not just people in need but those who have little or no family and would like to share Christmas day with others. Last year Peaches and her volunteers served over 700 dinners at St. Peters United Methodist Church, 8th and Central Ave. The menu this year includes turkey and all the fixings, plus desserts galore, live music, a freebies table of clothing and gifts. “Doors open at 11... Read More

Train Show, Parade, Sindia Day, Pops & More This Weekend

The JAY EGGLY TRAIN SHOW, one of the most popular of our Holiday events, is set for Dec. 4-5 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. The show is named after the late Jay Eggly, an Ocean City business man, who suggested that we start the exhibit. And how right he was. Train shows, Christmas and kids just naturally go together, and many adults have a warm spot in their hearts for the colorful, miniature models. The Ocean City Train Show and Sale features large working displays plus vendors that sell model trains, parts and accessories suitable for year around and holiday exhibits. A 10x20 ft. display will be exhibited by the South Jersey S Gaugers in the Solarium of the Music Pier with four to five models operating simultaneously. Loading... Read More
