Artisans Here This Weekend, Miss New Jersey Next

The Artisans of Philadelphia will return to Ocean City this weekend for its 70th Annual visit. The Artisans have been in business for over 100 years. It is a “Family Fraternal Benefit Society” whose mission is to provide affordable insurance coverage to working people. The organization is also known for supporting charitable organizations in the Delaware Valley.

On Sat., June 6th, the Artisans will hold its Miss Artisan Pageant 8 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. At this event, a young lady is selected to represent the group for the upcoming year. Professional entertainment is featured in the program. The public is invited, admission is free.

Over the years, the Artisans have been generous supporters of the Ocean City Ecumenical Food Cupboard and City events including the Mr. Mature America Pageant and our annual Tribute to the Philippines. During the evening, we will present a “Key to the City” to Theresa A. Ludwig, Most Excellent Master Artisan, the Society’s Chief Executive Officer.


The Miss New Jersey Pageant arrives in Ocean City on Wed., June 10th. Events begin with the Miss New Jersey Parade beginning 7 p.m. from 6th to 14th St. on the Boardwalk. Cierra Kaler-Jones, reigning Miss New Jersey, will lead the Parade.

Two former Miss Ocean City’s will compete for the title, Devon Vanderslice and Dana Piccoli. Theme for this year’s Parade is “Pages through the Ages.” All 28 contestants will “show their shoes” and be dressed to compliment the theme.

Pageant Emcee will be Dena Blizzard, who is an emcee at the Miss America Pageant, a frequent guest at New Jersey 101.5 radio and a rising star as a professional comedian. Dena is currently touring with her hilarious show “One Funny Mother,” which has become a huge hit in theaters throughout the East Coast. Dena sits on stage, folds laundry and describes her “adventures in motherhood.” A former Miss New Jersey, Dena adds fun and laughter to the Pageant.

Miss New Jersey preliminaries will be held June 11 and 12 with the finals and crowning set for Sat., June 13. For tickets access www.missnewjersey.net and click on tickets.

REGISTER YOUR BOAT AND HOME NOW FOR NIGHT IN VENICE: “Dancing Under the Stars” is the optional theme for the 61st. Annual Night In Venice Boat Parade and Bay Front Home Celebration on Sat., July 11th. The colorful boat parade will begin at 6 p.m. by the Longport Bridge at the north point of the Island.

An array of decorated boats, many featuring music, will sail along the Bay and in and out of lagoons to Tennessee Ave. Several hundred bay front homes will also be showcased. Both home and boat owners will compete for prizes. Entry is free. All boat owners will receive a complimentary photo of their boat in the Parade.

The dancing theme will be represented on a commemorative mug given to all boat and home contestants. Participants are reminded they are free to choose any theme they wish. Grand Marshal will be John Stauffer of Johnson’s Popcorn, celebrating its 75th Anniversary in Ocean City. Johnson’s will distribute “fun items” to both land and water entrants. The Channel 6 Action News Weather Team and a legendary member of the Philadelphia Flyers will also be featured in the Parade.

(June 4)  WONDER’S BIRTHDAY BASH at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, 6th and Boardwalk. Celebrate Wonder Bear’s Birthday from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. All rides only two tickets. At 9 p.m. see Birthday Bash FIREWORKS SHOW.  Rides open at 6 p.m. Wonder Bear will be available all night for photos. Celebrating 84 years on the Ocean City Boardwalk.

(June 9) The Ocean City Fine Arts League Announces its FREE JUNE MOVIE NIGHT, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” Based on a novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, the film follows the Journey of a nine year old boy as he attempts to solve a family mystery. Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock star. Movies are held at theOcean City Free Public Librarystarting 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
