Baby Parade Thursday, Little Miss O.C. on Friday

Ocean City’s 105th Baby Parade is set for Thursday, August 14th starting at 5 p.m. Founded by Philadelphia photo engraver, Leo Bamberger, it is the oldest, continuously run event of its kind in the nation.

The Parade starts at 6th and the Boardwalk and concludes at 12th and Boardwalk. It is open to children from infants to 10 years of age. Last minute registrations taken the day of the Parade.

The Parade will feature children in fancy and humorous displays plus floats and bands.There will be an awards ceremony in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, following the Parade. The Parade has a storied history. In 1983 New York Yankee legend Joe DiMaggio was grand marshal. Princess Grace Kelley, whose family owned a home in Ocean City, also appeared in the Parade and was known to enjoy the event while spending her summers at Ocean City.

Mark and Toby Soifer will be grand marshals of the Parade. Soifer has been the City’s Public Relations Director for 43 years. He has initiated numerous unusual events and some practical ones. He also walks in City parades as Trash Buster, the City’s environmental symbol promoting recycling and anti litter causes. Mark and Toby have been married for 57 years. Toby has assisted Mark in many of his projects while raising 4 children and pampering eight grandchildren some of whom will be at the Parade.

THE LITTLE MISS Ocean City Pageant is set for Fri., Aug. 15 starting 7 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Reigning Little Miss, Mary Grace Jamison will preside over the event and place the crown on the winner. Mary Grace has been an outstanding Little Miss representing the City in Parades and special events and interacting with her fans. The pageant is for young ladies 8-11 years. (Aug. 13) The Ocean City POPS presents the Best of Richard Rodgers and Andrew Lloyd Webber, 8 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. (Aug. 13-14) Joseph and the AMAZING Technicolor Dreamcoat presented by the Greater Ocean City Theater Company. The Biblical Saga of Joseph comes to life in this delightful, musical parable. A professional cast of singers and dancers present this acclaimed Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Tickets are $30 Adult, $20 children 12 and under and $25 for senior citizens. (Aug. 14) The Ocean City FISHING PIER Open House 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. invites visitors and shutterbugs to tour its Pier and clubhouse at 14th and Boardwalk. For information, call (609) 398-0534. 

(Aug. 14) The Ocean City Historical Museum, 17th and Simpson Ave., continues its Summer Lecture Series at 7 p.m. with “Treasures of the Museum” presented by The Curatorial Committee.

Ocean City is fortunate to have two organizations dedicated to the arts, The Ocean City Arts Center, 17th and Simpson Ave. and the Ocean City Fine Arts League (Art on Asbury) 608 Asbury Ave. Both present free monthly exhibits open to the Public. This month Art on Asbury is celebrating the Jersey Shore with work by talented local artists. Call (609) 814-0308 for information. The Fine Arts League presents Free Movies at the Ocean City Library, 17th and Simpson Ave., the first Tuesday of each month starting 6:30 p.m. On Sept. 2, they will show “Enchanted April” starring Miranda Richardson and Joan Plowright.


The Ocean City Arts Center is featuring the work New Jersey artist, Heather Lynn Gibson in August. Miss Gibson is a graduate of the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia  and was a Senior Graphic Art Designer for the Walt Disney Design Group. Call (609) 399-7628 for information.
