What’s Happening in Ocean City, NJ 7/14/16

PARADE ROUTE: The colorful decorated regatta begins at the Longport Bridge at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16. Boats travel along the bayfront and through lagoons to Tennessee Avenue.

WHERE TO VIEW: Free grandstand seating is available along street ends from Battersea Rd. to 16th St. and also at Tennessee Ave. Get there early. Available on a first come, first served basis. Streets include Battersea, North St., 1st St., 2nd St. Marina, 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th,15th, 16th Sts. and Tennessee Avenue.

Viewing is also available from Bayside Center, 520 Bay Ave. The Good Tymes Band will entertain. Crafts and games for children. Gates open 4:30 p.m. Admission is children under 12, $3, adults, $7. For tickets, call (609) 399-6111; visit or stop at the City Hall Welcome Center, 861 Asbury Ave, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No parking available at Bayside Center. Use free shuttle.

FREE SHUTTLE: Free Parking and shuttle service to and from viewing sites will be available starting 4:30 p.m. at the following locations: Airport Parking Lot, 25th and Bay  Ave., Soccer Field at Tennessee Ave., Community Center, 1735 Simpson Ave. Shuttle service will be available until 10:30 p.m.

VIEWING FROM RT. 52 CAUSEWAY: All pedestrians and bicyclists should use the Shared Use Bike Path and stay to the south side shoulder for viewing. No persons are allowed to bring chairs for seating onto the bridge. At no time will persons block the free movement of shared use bike path. No open alcoholic beverages are permitted on the bridge at any time. Persons are not permitted to walk along the bridge with motor vehicle traffic. Police will monitor the bridge while parade is in progress for assistance.

PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE SAFETY: Be aware that there will be large amounts of both pedestrian and bicycle traffic in bayfront areas. All roads are open to motor vehicle traffic. To ensure everyone is safe, obey the laws of the road and YIELD to pedestrians in crosswalks.

SAFETY REMINDERS: The city ordinance prohibiting alcoholic containers on the public right of way, streets and sidewalks will be strictly enforced. Make sure that your guests stay on your property. If traveling between locations, do not have an open container of alcohol. Both car drivers and boat captains must refrain from drinking alcohol. All areas on land and water will be heavily monitored by police, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and State Police Marine Division.

PARKING INFORMATION: Parking restrictions begin midnight Friday until midnight Saturday for the following locations: Both sides of Bay Ave. between 16th St. and 24th St., the East Side of Bay Ave. between 14th and 16th Sts. Also included W 16th St., W 17th St. and W 18th St. will have restrictions in place.

FIREWORKS: Launched from a barge north of the Ninth Street Bridge, roughly off 3rd St., after the parade concludes at Tennessee Avenue.

MEET AND GREET WITH GRAND MARSHAL NASTIA LIUKIN:  A very limited number of tickets ($15) will be sold for a “meet and greet” with Olympic gymnastics gold medalist Nastia Liukin, the 2016 grand marshal, at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at the Ocean City Music Pier. Tickets will be available at the Ocean City Music Pier Box Office and at starting at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 14. Liukin will make a free public appearance in front of the Music Pier at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

(July 13) THE MISS NIGHT IN VENICE BOARDWALK PARADE will be held starting 5 p.m. from 6th to 14th St. on the Boardwalk. Miss Night In Venice will be crowned that evening in ceremonies at the Moorlyn Theater starting 7 p.m.  Contestants have raised thousands of dollars for local charities including the Ocean City Food Cupboard and the HERO designated driver program.  Miss Night In Venice and her court will lead the boat Parade.

(July 13-14) 7:30 p.m. each night and 2 p.m. on Thursday. The Ocean City Pops presents WEST SIDE STORY. West Side Story is one of the most memorable musical love stories of all time. The Pops and Ocean City Theatre Company present this masterpiece of Bernstein and Sondheim. (July 17) The Ocean City Pops presents CARNAVAL! Special guests Alo Brasil join the Pops in this festive show. Accompanied by stunningly costumed dancers, these musicians enchant with a tornado of rhythm and sound. 8 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. (July 18) COLIN HAY of MEN AT WORK plus Jeffrey Gaines in concert.  Show time 7:30 p.m. at the Music Pier. Colin Hay is familiar to millions as a front-man, songwriter and vocalist.  His most recent release is a solo album titled “Next Year People” on Compass Records.  The frequent use of his music in TV and film, including hit shows such as Scrubs, Army Wives, Modern Family, the hit soundtrack to the film Garden State and the recently released Words and Pictures, have proven the timeless appeal of his songs. (July 19) JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH: Dahl’s classic takes the stage in a new musical that is perfect for the entire family. One boy, two awful aunts, five larger than life insects and a giant peach are involved!  James and a handful of bugs happen by when a giant peach snaps free of its stem and sweeps them into a marvelous adventure. 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier. (July 19) The Ocean City Pops presents SUMMER SWING! DANCE PARTY!  The dance floor will be open at the Music Pier. It will be a great night of Big Band Music featuring Joanna Pascale, vocalist and Ed Vezinho leads a 16-piece band playing hits from the big band era. 8 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. (July 20) Ocean City Pops presents ROCK ON: Join the Pops for a journey back to  hits of the ‘70s and ‘80s with dynamic artists Morgan James, LaKisha Jones and Rob Evans. Featuring the music of Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Queen and more. 8 p.m. at the Music Pier. (July 21) OCEAN CITY FISHING PIER OPEN HOUSE: 6-8:30 p.m. the Fishing Club invites shutterbugs and other visitors to tour its club house at 14th St. and Boardwalk. Enjoy a great view of the Ocean and Beach. The Martin Z. Mollusk Mascot will be a special guest. Visitors may make an optional donation of canned goods to support the Ocean City Food Cupboard.

(July 23) ESA SURF CONTEST: 7th St. Beach, sign- ups begin at 7 a.m. and the first heat in the water begins 8 a.m. Sign up on the beach the morning of the contest. (July 23) Ocean City’s 7TH annual TRIBUTE TO THE PHILIPPINES: Opening ceremonies 10 a.m. in front of the Music Pier with Consul General Mario DeLeon of the Philippines as special guest. Trade Fair of Philippine products and Ocean City services in loggia of Music Pier from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. admission free. Entertainment all morning  and into the early afternoon featuring amazing Filipino dancers hopping  between sticks as they perform, internationally renowned Filipino American singer Rene Sese, and Champion Yo Yo performers in front of the Music Pier

The city will also be hosting the  EASTERN REGIONAL YO-YO CHAMPIONSHIPS inside the Music Pier, all day with finals at 8 p.m.  For information, call (609) 399-6111.
