Seems like spring finally arrived with the Doo Dah Parade on Saturday. The sun was shining, the Boardwalk was full of cheerful spectators, the bands played, the costumed characters cavorted and over 500 basset hounds brought smiles to young and old alike. Here are some of the events that are coming your way between now and the big May 2nd. Block Party and beyond: (April 15) The public is invited to join the Ocean City Free Public Library at 5:30 p.m. for the rollout ribbon cutting of its new BOOKMOBILE. The event will be held on the 17th St. side of the Ocean City Community Center, 17th and Simpson Ave.  It will feature speakers from the Library Board and Staff. WHO WILL BEGIN PARADE:  The colorful Pitman Hobo Band will lead the Ocean City’s 30th Doo Dah Parade on Saturday, April 11th. The legendary Pitman organization has been with us all 30 years of the event. The Parade starts at noon at 6th and Asbury Ave., goes to 12th and Asbury, turns to the Boardwalk and ends at the Music Pier where there will be various ceremonies and the exciting PieAsco. The Hobo Band will be joined by two Dixieland Bands, a Bagpipe Band and the “School of Rock,” two high school pop bands. Ocean City’s second annual Mr. Mature America Pageant is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Music Pier. Seven contestants and three special guests will be featured in this unique contest for men 55 years and older. In addition to dancing to a rousing opening number “It’s Raining Men” (an amazing demonstration of senior agility) contestants will be asked to perform a talent, demonstrate poise and discuss their fondest memory. This past Sunday, MR. MATURE AMERICA CONTESTANTS gathered at the Music Pier for their initial orientation. There will be seven contestants and three special senior guest performers. The contestants are all in good shape. Only one using a cane which he discarded when rehearsing the lively dance number, “It’s Raining Men,” that will open the show on March 28. Choreographer Jessica Albertson lined up her charges and the music boomed from the sound system. After initial instructions the men high stepped, twirled and were permitted to improvise at the end of the dance. It was obvious that they were having a good time. OCEAN CITY, N.J.--- DICK RICHARDS, Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame Drummer and an original member of the legendary “Bill Haley’s Comets,” will be a guest performer at the Mr. Mature America Pageant. The 91 year old musician, a resident of Ocean City, still tours with a new edition of the Comets. He has also formed a local group, “The Ready Rockers,” who play Oldies concerts throughout the area. Richards and his Rockers will perform “Shake, Rattle and Roll” at the Pageant. The Rock classic will feature a rousing, drum solo by the durable musician. The second MR. MATURE AMERICA Pageant is set for March 28 at the Music Pier starting at 7 p.m. At 6 p.m. there will be a display of Memorabilia and keepsakes from area folks in conjunction with the Pageant’s theme MEMORIES. The Ocean City Historical Museum will feature a display. The exhibit will be open both before and after the program. We hope to use this exhibit as the basis for an Old Year’s Celebration that is in the planning stages with the Museum. You will be treated to the humorous and bizarre moments of the PHILLIES SPRING TRAINING program of 1915 on Saturday at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave. This was the season, 100 years ago, that the team won its First National League Pennant. It was quite different from the Spring Training being held in Florida today. The gloves were smaller, the baseballs were less hyper active and the players did not enjoy astronomical salaries. They had to have second jobs during the off season. But that 1915 session would have made an excellent Soap Opera.
