Memories is Theme of Mr. Mature America Pageant

Ocean City’s second annual Mr. Mature America Pageant is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Music Pier. Seven contestants and three special guests will be featured in this unique contest for men 55 years and older. In addition to dancing to a rousing opening number “It’s Raining Men” (an amazing demonstration of senior agility) contestants will be asked to perform a talent, demonstrate poise and discuss their fondest memory. My fondest memory has to be waiting impatiently for my first daughter, Rebecca to be born. Finally a nurse appeared holding an adorable infant (she looks just like her mother) and all was well in the world. Rebecca grew up to become a nurse, herself. She works in the operating room of Inspira Medical Center in Vineland. We are suggesting that at... Read More

It was “Raining Men” at the Music Pier Sunday

This past Sunday, MR. MATURE AMERICA CONTESTANTS gathered at the Music Pier for their initial orientation. There will be seven contestants and three special senior guest performers. The contestants are all in good shape. Only one using a cane which he discarded when rehearsing the lively dance number, “It’s Raining Men,” that will open the show on March 28. Choreographer Jessica Albertson lined up her charges and the music boomed from the sound system. After initial instructions the men high stepped, twirled and were permitted to improvise at the end of the dance. It was obvious that they were having a good time. Especially during the improvisation part during which you will see gyrations that defy the forces of gravity. “Raining Men” will be drenched with fun. The men also rehearsed their talents:   George... Read More

Spring Training Comes to Library on Saturday

Spring Training Comes to Library on Saturday

You will be treated to the humorous and bizarre moments of the PHILLIES SPRING TRAINING program of 1915 on Saturday at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave. This was the season, 100 years ago, that the team won its First National League Pennant. It was quite different from the Spring Training being held in Florida today. The gloves were smaller, the baseballs were less hyper active and the players did not enjoy astronomical salaries. They had to have second jobs during the off season. But that 1915 session would have made an excellent Soap Opera. Some players almost drowned in a storm, several members of the team were pursued by a lynch mob and there was an exciting confrontation when the team traveled to St. Petersburg by boat. The... Read More
