September 11th Ceremony Features Sculpture, Street Rods This Weekend

The City will honor the September 11th victims and their families at “A Day To Remember Ceremony” on Tues., September 11 at 7 p.m. with music beginning at 6 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the 6th St. Firehouse across from the Tabernacle Grounds. It will feature the unveiling and dedication of a new Memorial Sculpture that features the I-beam from the World Trade Center. The City worked with the Community Arts Project (CAP) and artist Jose’ Chora to design and build the memorial after Mayor Jay Gillian requested the I-Beam from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “We are honored to unveil the new community sculpture in Ocean City. As usual, the summer has whizzed by. As usual, there will be plenty to do at America’s Greatest Family Resort all through the beautiful fall season. (Aug. 31) The Labor Day Weekend kicks off with the King and Queen of Plop Contest, aka Miss Fall and Mr. Fall Guy, on Friday, 11 a.m. at the 9th St. Beach opposite the Music Pier. Competitors are requested to demonstrate their best plop or fall in slow motion as a way of welcoming the new season to Ocean City. Entry in the contest is free and is open to all age groups. Ocean City has an unusual way of welcoming the fall season. Four years ago, we initiated the Mr. Fall Gal and Mr. Fall Guy contest also known as the King and Queen of Plop competition. The event will be held on Fri., Aug, 31 at 11 a.m. on the 9th Street Beach opposite the Music Pier. Contestants are asked to greet the fall season, always a lovely time of year, by falling dramatically (and in slow motion) to the sand. Those performing the most dramatic renditions will be crowned the King and Queen of Plop. Ocean City’s 103rd Annual BABY PARADE, the longest consecutively run in the nation, is set for Thurs., Aug. 9th. The colorful event begins at 10:15 a.m. Parade route is from 6th to 12th Sts. on the Boardwalk. Grand Marshals of this year’s Parade are Fred and Susan Miller, authors of popular Ocean City history books. The parade competition is open to children from infants to 10 years of age. They parade down the boardwalk in decorated go carts, coaches, express wagons and small floats featuring imaginative themes that range from nursery rhymes to Philly sports teams. For 39 years the MISS CRUSTACEAN Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant has attracted hundreds of curvaceous crustaceans and their best friends. On Aug. 1, America’s most glamorous Crabettes will congregate at 1 p.m. on the 6th Street Beach to compete for the “Coveted Cucumber Rind Cup,” symbol of Crustacean Comeliness. A cucumber represents a year’s supply of groceries for a hermit crab if supplemented with tree bark, pizza crust and a dash of swamp water.
