The Trail of Two Cities between Ocean City and Somers Point will be a nostalgic jaunt for many this year. The 15th Annual 5K run/walk across the antiquated bridges and causeway will be the last before the old spans are demolished to make way for the new, multi-million dollar sky scrapers that will change the landscape of Rt. 52. The old fashioned bridges that yawned open to let boats through and cause traffic back-ups will be a thing of the past. But the former causeway, with its proximity to the water and congenial view of the bay, has installed fond memories into the hearts of many visitors and residents alike over the years. Ocean City's 63rd Annual HALLOWEEN PARADE will be held today, Thursday, Oct. 28 starting 7:15 p.m. at 6th and Asbury Ave. and concluding at 11th and Asbury. The Parade is organized and presented by the Ocean City Exchange Club with Jeff Shirk directing the event. This popular parade attracts a large and enthusiastic crowd to the City. Hundreds compete for best costumes. The Hobo Band and various High School Bands entertain. There are colorful floats, cheerleaders and much more, eight divisions in all. Grand Marshal will be Reily Gunnels, long time Ocean City resident and a member of the 1960 Philadelphia Eagles NFL Championship team. Ocean City has developed a series of major fall special events and none is larger than its Indian Summer Weekend Festival, Oct. 9-11th. Centerpiece of the event is the mile-long block party that extends from 5th to 14th Streets along Asbury Ave. on Sat., Oct. 9. Over 400 juried crafters from throughout the east coast participate in the block party that features hand made products ranging from wind chimes and floral decorations to paintings and photography. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A huge fireworks display is scheduled on Saturday following the block party. I'd like to start this column with a reminder about SHAINA HORTON, a young Ocean City mother and friend to many, who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. A fund raiser is set to help the family cope with expenses during a very trying period. Shaina is currently at Cooper Hospital and her condition is being monitored by the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The event will be held at the Flanders Hotel, 11th and Boardwalk, on Fri., Oct. 1 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The evening includes dinner, dancing, beverages, a silent auction and entertainment. Over 7000 bikers will roll into town on Saturday for the annual MS BIKE-A-THON, one of the largest events of its kind in the country. The event raises over $3 million to combat Multiple Sclerosis and assist clients and their families affected by the disease. This monumental event was started by Philadelphia anchor and news personality, Larry Kane. He had a meeting with City officials and some of his friends at the Plymouth Inn. About 30 signed up for the first ride. Larry promoted the bike-a-ton on his TV program. He built the ride into a huge fund raiser. Ocean City's AVIATION WEEKEND features two exciting, free events. Action is set For Sat., Sep. 18 at the Municipal Airport, 26 and Bay Ave. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sun., Sept.19 from noon to 3 p.m. from 6th to 14th Sts. over the Boardwalk. The Airport grounds will be packed with unusual airplanes on its runway. Visitors will be able to inspect an array of antiques, World War II planes, Home Builts, Ultra Lights and Classics.
