First Night, First Day at Beach Ring in New Year

Ocean City’s popular FIRST NIGHT on Dec. 31 followed by FIRST DAY AT THE BEACH on Jan. 1 are two economical ways to ring in the New Year. First Night, which features over 75 entertainment programs at nine locations, is priced at just $14 an admission button. First Day at the Beach is free unless you’re running the 5K and then there’s a $20 charge, but you receive a T Shirt at registration. First Night was initiated at Boston in 1976 as a safe, non-alcoholic way to keep families and individuals together on the holiday. Ocean City began First Night 17 years ago. This Community’s CAROLFEST, featuring a cast of professional performers, is set for 7:30 p.m., Sat., Dec. 20 at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Admission is free. Show goers are asked to bring gifts of non-perishable food for the City’s Food Cupboard. Greg Gregory, a Somers Point businessman and talented comedian, will emcee and add his noted sense of humor to the program. Ted Prior and the El Live Christmas Band will play medleys of Christmas favorites including Winter Wonderland, Blue Christmas, Oh Tannenbaum, Jingle Bells, Frosty, Rudolph and more. Parade, City Hall Open House, Sindia Day Set for Saturday

Over 40 organizations will participate in Ocean City’s Christmas Parade set for Sat., Dec. 13 starting 10:30 a.m. The Parade route is from 6th to 11 Sts. on Asbury Ave. The Parade will be followed by the second annual City Hall Open House from noon to 1:30 p.m. City Hall is located at the corner of 9th and Asbury Ave. Offices will be decorated with unique wreaths and there will be entertainment and refreshments. The Christmas Parade will feature bands, floats and costumed characters. It will be led by the Elizabeth High School Marching Band. This is the busiest holiday season in my memory for special events and music in Ocean City. The downtown Christmas celebration last Friday with Santa descending from the roof of City Hall was a huge hit. Children cheered (well more like screamed) at the sight of the airborne elf. Wonderland’s free train rides at City Hall Annex were crowded all day and will be open again this weekend. There will be free horse and carriage rides again from noon to 3 p.m. on weekends till Dec. 20-21 leaving from in front of City Hall. There will be photos with Santa in a lifeboat at the Music Pier the same weekends for a charge from noon till 3 p.m. Our colorful CHRISTMAS PARADE is yet to come! A highlight of this weekend’s Quiet festival will be the kick-off of NAP, the National Association of Tired People, a festival spin off. I have been elected president of NAP, an organization I founded three years ago but have been too exhausted to do anything about until now. In accepting the presidency I note that I have been tired for about 40 years and so feel uniquely qualified to represent the millions of tired folks in this country and around the world. Surely we can all find something to be tired about. ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PARADE, Thursday, Oct. 30 starts 7:15 p.m. at 6th and Asbury Ave. and ends at 11th and Asbury. It is presented by the Ocean City Exchange Club in cooperation with the City. Late entries in the costume divisions will be taken starting 6:30 p.m. at 6th and Asbury Ave. There will be bands and floats to complement the many costumed marchers. Bob Blevin, our recently retired police chief, will be grand marshal. Bring canned or dried food to the Parade. Boy Scouts will collect your donations for the Ocean City Food Cupboard. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OCEAN CITY Howl about this! The DOG OF THE YEAR will be named on Sun., Oct. 26 at the Port O’ Call, 15th and Boardwalk. The big announcement is scheduled for noon. Twelve local pooches have been holding their doggie breaths anticipating the news. The suspense ends Sunday when one is crowned and trots away with all of the biscuits. The winner was selected by money vote with funds benefiting the Ocean City Dog Park. The announcement will be followed at approximately 12:30 p.m. by a Howl-Oween Costume Contest open to all canines.
