Traditional events highlight Easter weekend in Ocean City

Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. Thursday (April 13) for a spectacular opening to the 2017 Ocean City Pops season with Vanessa Williams on June 25.

Williams is one of the most respected and multi-faceted performers in the entertainment industry today. She has sold millions of records worldwide and scored No. 1 and Top 10 hits on charts including Pop, Dance, R&B, Adult Contemporary, Holiday, Latin, Gospel and Jazz. Her critically acclaimed work in film, television, recording and the Broadway stage have earned her four Emmy nominations, 11 Grammy nominations, a Tony nomination, 3 SAG award nominations, 7 NAACP Image Awards and 3 Satellite Awards. Her platinum single “Colors of the Wind” from the Disney film “Pocahontas” won the Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe for Best Original Song.  Williams achieved a career pinnacle when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.

Backed by Ocean City’s renowned Pops orchestra, Williams will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25 on the Ocean City Music Pier. Ticket prices are $85, $75 and $65. Tickets for the remainder of a great new Ocean City Pops season will go on sale May 20.


Ocean City’s Easter Fashion Promenade takes place with judging at 1 p.m. Sunday (April 16) in front of the Ocean City Music Pier on the boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. The annual event pays tribute to an era when families showed off their finery during strolls on the boardwalk.

Anybody is welcome to enter the free event, and no advance registration is required. Awards will be given the following age categories: newborn-to-2, 3-to-5, 6-to-8 and 9-to-12. Other divisions include: Best Dressed Teen Male, Best Dressed Teen Female, Best Dressed Gentleman, Best Dressed Woman, Best Dressed Couple, Most Unusual Bonnet, Best Easter Bonnet, Best Dressed Family.

The Philly Keys, a dueling piano act, will perform in front of the Music Pier starting at noon. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for photographs after the Promenade.

Ocean City’s Easter events start at 6:30 a.m. Sunday with a nondenominational Sunrise Service on the Music Pier. All are welcome.

The second of two Great Egg Hunts on the beach starts promptly at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (April 15). Thousands and thousands of eggs will be placed in areas of the beach between 11th Street and 14th Street. Age categories include: 2-and-under (at 11th Street), 3 years old (at 11th Street), 4 years old (at 12th Street), 5 years old (at 12th Street), 6 and 7 years old (at 13th Street). LIVING LAST SUPPER (April 13-14): Live actors sit “frozen” in a depiction of Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting. One-by-one, they break their freeze to speak their mind on the fateful evening. At the Ocean City Tabernacle auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

OC POPS EARTH DAY (April 21): The second in a series of concerts featuring Ocean City Pops members includes music inspired by nature in honor of Earth Day. Featuring violin, bassoon and piano. Free admission to the 7 p.m. performance at the Ocean City Free Public Library.

BEACH SWEEPS (April 22): Volunteers encouraged to meet at the Ocean City Music Pier for supplies and assignments in a beach cleanup 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22. The 32nd annual event is sponsored by Clean Ocean Action and Ocean City. Pre-registration available at

SPRING FESTIVAL OF GUARANTEED AMERICAN HANDICRAFTS AND FINE ART (April 22-23): 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Ocean City Music Pier. CURTAIN UP: THE SCHOOL OF AMERICAN BALLET WORKSHOP PERFORMANCES (April 27): The second in a series of free film screenings of the Lincoln Center’s finest performances includes some of the best of ballet. The film starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall.

OCEAN CITY GREAT STRIDES WALK (April 29): Great Strides is a family-oriented event with a 5-kilometer walk, children’s activities, food and festivities. OCEAN CITY POPS STUDENT COMPETITION (May 3): Founded in memory of Esther C. Weil, a piano teacher and life-long patron of the arts, the seventh annual competition is open to vocalists, instrumentalists, and pianists in grades 9 to 12 from Atlantic and Cape May counties. The first-prize winners each will receive $1000 and be featured in a Pops concert during the 2017 summer season. The contest is open to the public and starts at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 3 on the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Call 609-391-0678.

HISTORICAL MUSEUM SUNDAY BUFFET BRUNCH (May 7): The Ocean City Historical Museum invites the community to a Sunday buffet at 12:30 p.m. May 7 at Clancy’s by the Bay in Somers Point. Guests will enjoy a short presentation on “Stormy Weather in Ocean City” presented by Paul Anselm. CHRIS PERONDI’S STUNT DOG EXPERIENCE (May 10): Featuring dogs that have been rescued from pounds and shelters. This performing arts theater show was created in 2008 after the Perondi’s appearance on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.” The new show includes lighting effects, visual props and costumes, crowd participation, unique stunts and tricks, challenges, doggy dancing, freestyle flying disc, and features Chris Perondi’s famous Stunt Dog Triathlon!  Show times are 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk.
